I would assume that the no-VST limitation has two benefits for PreSonus.

1. Far fewer bugs. Why deal with other developers' issues without getting paid?
2. Highlights your own products. If it's all you and all good, all that good is you.

Personally, I think it's a smart way to draw in people new to the world of making music on computers. Those of us with too many VSTs will find it unappealing but let's be honest: we already have a DAW. If we didn't, why would we have VSTs?

Not that it matters much to me. I already have a DAW. A few, in fact, and one of them is StudioOne. I finally got around to recording something in it the other day and there were strange crackles in the audio. The funny part is I'm using a PreSonus preamp to record and it only seems to crackle when recording in StudioOne! Hmm... if I had the time I'd run some tests...

I just wanted to mention Presence it a pretty cool instrument, and you can teach the basics of synthesis with it, it loads soundfonts and is easily automated, really for a freebie this is a hugely cool instrument. If I managed a music school I would be sure to get this installed and recommend for use for all students. You really can do a lot with it and for a beginner it may be better than getting them distracted with so many different instruments.

you have waveforms ie. samples, filters, envelopes, lfo. etc. Not exactly the most powerful example but for the basics it does give you the starting point. And no they didn't hire me. Anyhow I'm thinking of my own kid when I say this. I think your jab about guitar is a bit much. I'm not wrong in what I'm saying.

Maybe, but to learn synthesis, you can give your kids one of this 3 OSC free VSTi synths and they learn much more - therefore they don't need PreSonus Studio One... You can't learn synthesis with a sample player, that's all I've stated.

I'm looking at it from the context of the classroom, for a teacher with a class having one instrument that has a broad range of available sounds and can teach basics about sound design it is great, much easier for the teacher and manageable because it is very simple

sure a 3 OSC synth will teach much more, but I'm not talking about that level of depth or specialization, I'm just looking at the whole app for its potential as a general musical education tool. My question would be is the free license available to use in schools, I would hope so. Not like there is much music education in schools in the US anymore though, not like when I was a kid.

There was a low priced PreSonus Education Box for schools, but I don't know if it already exists...

PreSonus Studio One FREE??!
