Don't hear much about this but it has a good crossgrade price and looks pretty powerful. Anyone using it? Seems not to be many powerful audio apps on the Mac.

Stefano (the developer) was kind enough to provide me with an NFR license for DSP 4 just the other day. It can host VST & AU plugins so it's very useful for testing.

I haven't had much time to explore the update or compare differences to v3, but it is is a popular and highly regarded app with sound designers as it allows recording directly from plugins, support for FX chains (can be saved), and rendering directly to the editor for (destructive) sample accurate editing.

There are not a lot of great audio editors available for Mac, but DSP Quattro is an excellent alternative to Bias Peak Pro (which is quite expensive) so that's a win.

Back when I couldn't afford Bias Peak, DSP Quattro was the best editor I could find for my Mac, and I really enjoyed it. I found the interface to be clean, and the functionality, while perhaps not as fully rounded as that of Peak, were plenty for me.

I can't remember whether I first bought version one or two, but I've upgraded ever since, and I've never been disappointed by the program. And, in general, it's been very stable, and tech support has been very responsive, with numerous free updates over the years, not to mention that this is a great upgrade price if you already own version 3 of the DSP Quattro.

And of course, if the built-in plugins don't do it all for you, it accepts VST and AU plug-ins.

To sum up: If you can't afford (simply don't like interface of Bias Peak, or now Wavelab Elements, DSP Quattro offers a great alternative.

I was given access to the beta when a certain plug in I own wasn't working properly in version 3. I've been really satisfied with DSPQ and version 4 covers most of the things I wanted in v3, so I'm happy. Plus a developer who doesn't tell you to wait for the new version and just pops out a beta at you so you can get back to work is rare these days.

Sorry if this is stated somewhere obvious but is it a 64 bit app? And does it host 64 bit plug-ins?

He sent us a NFR too. It looks really great, but I didn't have much time to test it, as I work primarily on the PC.

With the latest update to renoise(!) all my audio editing needs were answered.

In fact, I enjoy using renoise more for chopping audio than I ever did as a tracker/sequencer.

Anyone know of any sites that have some decent screenshots and reviews of this app? - the developer site is pretty poor, all the images are tiny and unreadable.

It's a split between the two as far as usefulness. Personally Wave Editor is fugly as hell, and I'm not a fan of "layers" for audio work. DSPQ regularly is on sale for the same price as Wave Editor, the crossgrade is the same price BTW.

Both companies are run by nice people, but I did get kind of a chuckle out of the fact that when I bought DSPQ, Wave Editor was $250, now it's $79 I believe? There's a thread somewhere in OSXAudio with me badgering the Wave Editor guys about pricing it too high, guess they listened and realized competing with Peak wasn't going to work so they went under DSPQ's price.

Thanks - I'd not heard of that. Just had a look at it and it is the same price as the crossgrade price for DSP Quattro though - which I qualify for. Also a lot of the things that are addons for Wave Editor such as instrument and fx racks come as standard in DSPQ and it also has tools for removing noise from recorded Vinyl, which is one of the things I want it for. OTOH the dithering and SRC seem on paper to be better in Wave Editor but I'm not sure I need those so much.

Would be nice if it had some more metering and analysis features - doesn't seem to even have an osc or stereo field monitor

Wavelab Essentials looks like it might be the most powerful Mac audio editor for the price tbh

Having no problem zooming in as far as I want here - also the pencil tool is great - you can directly edit the waveform with it
