We have about 10000 now, we could have 2 times that amount and it would not bother me at all.

Different users will prefer different presets for different genres.

There are no good and no bad presets, only presets that can be or can not be useful in your song.

But that "DX7 sindrom" is exactly what I thought.
Thousands of patches.
Who have the time to listen, not to mention sort them?
Mostly people just collect them.

In 99% of the cases, I make my own patches, in line with the requirements of current musical situation.
But people who have less time want to use finished presets.
Now, imagine a nightmare looking for a single "patch that sounds like...".

Synth1's preset browser isn't exactly making this job easier.
And if we want this huge library to be useful, now is the time to make it categorised to the tiny detail.
Before we see another 10000.

But who can/will do it?
Even if I try to make some "categorisation software", who will go through all 17000 (yes, I have that much, maybe more) and make notes?

Nevertheless, if there is an option, I'm sure there will be people willing to do it.

Well, I just realised that I already made this kind of software!?
But of course, you'll still have to go through all the presets and write the categorization marks.
Some of the existing presets have those marks already, so you can cut the time by using Finder to search for a keyword "bas" or "pad", or even for parameter values.

The problems with Synth1 are manifold, very wide range of sounds,
incredibly easy to transform presets, layering many instances barely
nudges the cpu of even dumpster-dive computers. It was used by many
in the early days, who established themselves as great sound designers,
so few really need to buy many commercial instruments.

Then the developer goes and releases some great new features
just as the dust was settling, and bigbox synth sales
started to rebound a little

If Ichiro releases more updates, and you make it even easier to use,
all the big gun synths will go to the custom shop business model

Maybe it is time to arrange the existing "clutter", before the next rush?
Or maybe is it smarter to wait for Ichiro to implement new or similar (for him , my ideas/codes are always free) categorisation system?

Anyway, "SY1Tools Finder" method can do this job very well, I think.
IMO, the HUGE advantage of this method is that you can make YOUR OWN categories.
But it takes patience to make it work, just as it would be with any other catalog database system. No instant solutions here

That's messed up. I probably have 10,000 of those suckers, 2/3 sound like they were produced without listening to them first.

One idea is to take the top rated Zen patches and quickly cut out some standouts from those to make a bank or two.

Zen is another story. It has tags, but it also has some problems and limitations. We had a little discussion about it here.

One more idea is to use vstpreset browser, but it has limited number of fixed categories/tags.

Yea, that's my problem with them, everytime I go for presets I end up just using either the Kayoti's "stomp" bank, or wavephonics, the vast majority of the rest is just wacky distraction from my flow...
