No amps or ampsims were harmed in the recording of this HiHi

Just decided to setup a condenser mic and see what came about. Recorded the main acoustic rhythm (1st track) in a tiled bathroom. Because I didn't want to stop the creativity and inspiration flowing and think of another chord progression to continue it as an actual song, I began layering with acoustic guitar sounds and other found sounds/objects in the room to fill out the frequency spectrum. Had a melody in my head after that, so I whistled it. I had the amp on and warmed up, thinking I would do something experimental like sticking it in the bathroom down the hall or the mic in the bathroom to capture a far away roomy sound too add a lot of depth, but decided to keep it purely acoustic.

Anyone who knows the sound at the very end gets a prize Very Happy

Quirky and original, but in a good way. Good playing and a great recording. The overall sound of this is excellent. On top of all that, it's a nice tune.

I wish I could whistle like that Embarassed

Is that a cat purring?

Great track Cool

The whistling took a couple of takes and a glass of water. You have to be the proper distance and position away from the mic, or else you get clipping and too much "wind noise". Too far and you don't get any body to the sound, and it picks up only some of the whistles.

Yep, I got an unexpected visitor when I was recording the end of the "lap steel" part, in the form of my happy purring lap cat Lucy, who came in to the room probably after hearing the whistling, and jumped up onto my lap. The mic was about a foot away and the purring was loud enough to be heard in the cans so I kept the recording going. It was picking up the birds chirping outside too, even with the windows shut, so I just left all that in to add to the overall atmosphere to end the track.

This wasn't done to a click track because the headphone cord didn't reach the bathroom, so then I did the intro count strums/taps, so possibly later I could add drums, but nixed that, and thought it would sound more natural if I just used a shaker and the acoustic guitar body for rhythm.

All sounds captured with a Behringer B2 Pro condenser mic going into an M-Audio Mobile Pre interface. Cheap Fender acoustic. Just quick setup and go, as I really did not intend for this to become a working track. I was just going to experiment with different mic positions and distances as a way to use "natural" EQ and ambience.

I rediscovered and got back into the band Blind Melon recently. A lot of their songs have this honky tonk rag time feel with a psychedelic acoustic edge to them, even though they would get lumped into the early 90's grunge era bands. One of their songs called "Galaxy" at the end, they let the tape keep rolling, and Shannon Hoon opens the door/window to the house they were recording in, and says "Listen man, listen, listen, you can hear the cats man". The mic in the room picked up some stray cats meowing loudly outside. But it was only random coincidence that my cat happened to come in the room at the time and jump up by the mic, so that's another reason why I left that part in.
