Terminology question (new to audio production) - relating to the Kaossilator

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

So I have a grasp of some technical concepts to do with making sounds and music, but one thing I am confused about has come about because of the Korg Kaossilator. If you know what this is or have one yourself, this will make sense; otherwise it likely won't

The Korg Kaossilator/Kaossilator 2 has a button it likes to call a "Gate Arpeggiator" - but what would the equivalent of this be outside of the scope of the Kaossilator?

I want to be able to use something like this in my workflow so that when I press a note it will repeat the note over and over as long as its held (rather than sustain the note). Additionally, I'm wondering how to then create different patterns like the Kaossilator's built in 50 (well, my own actually - hence why I thought of wanting to do this to begin with).

As far as I can tell, this would be something you could do with a step sequencer... although an arpeggiator (using a single note) would also do the same thing I think. But is this what the feature really is? I have no idea :) - but I just want to be able to hold down a key and it to repeat the same note over and over on a pattern that I define (some notes longer, some shorter). Again - this is based on the perspective of someone who has only really been using a Kaossilator 2 for a week!

Thanks for any help! PS - Ive tried to search already, but im not sure what to really look for :)

Download is broken - cant seem to download :(

Something like mgTriggerGate is exactly what im after - it seems the Kaossilator's "Gate Arpeggiator" doesnt just "chop" the sound up ("trancegate" on google got me mgTriggerGate which does this) but seems to repeat the sound over and over like a sequencer; the difference being that some notes can be longer or shorter, whereas I cant find a step sequencer that does this (mgTriggerGate does but again, this simply fragments a sound rather than repeat it)
