hey,
my keyboardist friend has a Yamaha FS1R that he might sell and he was asking me how to sample the whole thing in AutoSampler, but i wonder if there isn't a cheap way to have FS1R?
he uses mostly the REAKTOR Player..
i saw the Zero-G Nostalgia bank so far, but that would require him to buy Kontakt i think..

Reaktor wouldn't be of much help... he needs a real sampler for what he wants, Reaktor is not suited for disk streaming at all.

There's Hollow Sun FS1R library, as well. Kontakt is necessary.

As EvilDragon says: He could just purchase - Hollow Sun 'Yamaha FS1R Collection'.

http://www.hollowsun.com/HS2/products/FS1R/

Then again, he'd need Kontakt! D'oh! Smile

Formation v1.2
By Bradley Gray

For Reaktor

http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=userlibrary&L =1&type=0&ulbr=1&plview=detail&patchid=9627

Quote:
Formant FM with Formant Filter, Grain Cloud, and multi FX
This stemmed from a post in the forum about recreating the FS1R in Reaktor.

Whilst I do not pretend that this even touches the FS1R, this is my 'proof of concept' prototype which I built after reading (and participating in) the discussion.

I will probably follow this up at a later date with a more efficient, flexible and complete implementation.

It consists of four or six FM operators. Four of them are an adaptation of the Reaktor Formant Oscillator core cell - starting as a sine wave, but with a formant control.
The other two are multimode filters but with sine and triangle oscillator modes, as well as a saturation waveshaper mode.

Next there is a stereo polyphonic Formant Filter - adapted from one in the UL which is in turn adapted from a factory instrument (which I couldn't find, hence the UL version) - with enveloped noise.
From there it passes into the stereo polyphonic Grain Cloud with modulation envelope.

Finally, I've included a cut down version of a multiFX I'm working on from another project.

Oscillator pitches and filter frequencies are specified in semitones relative to the input note pitch, and FM is routed OUT from the operators in the form of output busses, visible along the bottom of each operator. This is more personal preference of FM implementation than anything

This file was made in the Reaktor 5.5.1 Beta which I think isn't backwards compatible, unfortunately.

To "sample the whole thing" is impossible - it's a synth. I wanted to have a software version of the FS1R myself but there is none. However, there have been attempts to build Reaktor ensembles with a similar synthesis. You could start your search here:http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php? t=116553

I haven't heard the FS1R since it was originally released. I forget the patch name, but I recall being particularly enthralled with this one synthetic solo vocal formant sound. I've eyed the Hollow Sun sample set numerous times, wondering if that patch was in there, but I don't think I hear it in the demo song. Does that ring a bell for anyone?

hmm.. you guys make me want to play with the thing.. my friend offered to sell it to me, but it sounds like he wants close to $1000 for it..

but, after all of this - he is an expert pianist who only dabbles in synthesis.. can you guys recommend any software that is similar generally, not copying the FS1R, but that would allow him to do some fun FM synthesis without much learning.. i think that he is selling it because he can't do a lot of the programming with only 4 knobs and little knowledge of software based MIDI control..

Native Instruments FM8 is a great FM synth... extremely powerful, but with a very accessible interface. Just going into the so-called "expert" page and playing around with the inter-modulation between the different FM operators is an absolute joy. You also get all the NI effects borrowed from Guitar Rig, such as speaker cabinets and saturation, which can take sterile FM sounds in an entirely different direction.

Usually in Europe it's available for around 400 Euros. 1k$ sounds a bit much.
Even for synth enthusiasts it's a complex beast since it not only offers FM synthesis (which is enough to keep you busy for a lifetime) but also formant synthesis.

Maybe you can spot the name of the original sound here. No doubt Steve from Hollow Sun will be able to give you the definitive answer on his Kontakt Set ...

Big Tick Rhino. 6-osc FM with custom waves, also handles samples, and with subtractive filtering.

To laymen, software development is something akin to wizardry. Neither time, nor effort are involved. If software is missing features they want, or has bugs, it is solely because someone has been too lazy to wave their magic wand.

It's picking up in price recently. Should be well over 500-600 euros now... I'd like to have one for 400, though! Very Happy

Thank you for the YouTube links! I'm still not 100% sure which one I recall, but it would have been one of these three:

03 Choir
11 VocoTouch
75 Vox Move

To be honest, none of these really blew me away this time. Its funny how all these years of hearing various synths come and go has altered my perception. Now I have any number of different ways to make formant pad sounds like those. In fact, I did make a pretty kickass one on my Nord Modular G2.

Still, the FS1R is a nice sounding synth, no doubt about it. The only reason I didn't buy one when they were new was because of the interface. I didn't want to be stuck editing on a tiny display or with an editor.

I just bought the Hollow Sun FS1r sample set for Kontakt (encouraged by this thread, no less).

I think that the set works well as an indication of what the h/w box can do, and it's very well recorded with pristine audio quality.

That said, quite a few sounds, including many e-pianos and lovely pads, are sampled with too few velocity layers (typically just three and some even less). The result is frequent surprising (read = objectionable) jumps in tonal quality when you exceed a velocity threshold, rendering some patches more or less unplayable if you're a friend of seamless timbral transitions as you dig into your keyboard.

In conclusion, this bank is hardly a replacement for the real thing, although it does have a plethora of beautiful and intriguing sounds, especially in the pads department.

I wonder if you should try using the AET filter on those velocity layers to make the transitions a bit smoother? When the library was released, K4 didn't exist yet. Smile
