It was a really good article. One thing that I was never aware of before was the three app limit for sounds per device.
"iOS has an audio-buffer limited to 3 apps making sounds per device. This is true of all iPad versions. Audiobus will allow you to get around this by bringing together multiple device audio streams! You can run 3 apps on one device, 3 apps on another and sum them together on a 3rd. Or, as in my tests, run 3 apps on one iPad, 2 on another and have Audiobus be the 3rd."
That's unfortunate, but shouldn't be too bad. I don't plan on buying more devices just to increase the number of audio apps I can have open though. It would be nice to be able to have all of the applications open and running for a quick mix-down. In this case though, I'll have to make do with what is available. Regardless, Audiobus is still going to be a huge leap forward for audio on iOS.

This is starting to look really encouraging
The review also said the 'most amazing part can't be announced yet'!!!
Lets speculate!!!!
A complete 'game-changer' for me would be having Audiobus show up as maybe a plugin or some add-on to your main DAW of choice (Mac/PC - Cubase, Logic, Reaper etc etc). Its probably a lazy, crazy mans dream but I'd love an easy way of integrating my iOS sounds into Cubase as easy as firing up a VSTi. I would obviously want the iOS stuff to be in sync etc but the Audiob.us (cool url
) claims that no hardware is needed. I'm guessing that current wireless tech wouldn't stream multi audio channels, sample accurately but I could easy use my iPads as a virtual submix and feed a stereo pair into my DAW - That would be cool for starters
Whatever it is, Audiobus is by the look of things, still going to make iOS music making a whole lot more fun. Audiocopy/paste is cool and has enabled for those who want to put in the effort a means to create tunes from various apps without leaving the device. Having that process made 'more-like-the-studio' is a very welcome step forward imo.
Excellent news.

Is the iPad and Audiobus so limited when connecting apps that they need to make the review about using several iPads?!

Only in the sense that our PCs are so limited that we're posting this conversation on a server hosted thousands of miles away and reading it on separate computers (i.e. several PCs).BMoore wrote:Is the iPad and Audiobus so limited when connecting apps that they need to make the review about using several iPads?!

In what respect?? The ipad 1 would struggle to play Animoog & iMS20 together, so a three app limit is probably all the hardware currently can take. I'm happy though as each app can contain multiple instruments & channels, so I will think of it as the 3 submix limitBMoore wrote:Is the iPad and Audiobus so limited when connecting apps that they need to make the review about using several iPads?!
Overcoming this limit by adding in additional devices to increase submix channels is just an added bonus to the tech imo.

Yes, iOS and iPad (or iphone) are somewhat limited. However, it's getting better, and it is 2-3 (or more) generations ahead of Android (Android developers are still trying to deal with the latency issue, and there aren't enough available apps to really even begin to worry about inter-application communication. But then again, the Android audio technology is getting better all the time too.BMoore wrote:Is the iPad and Audiobus so limited when connecting apps that they need to make the review about using several iPads?!
The way I see it, it is a trade off. You are giving up a little inter-application communication (which is getting better all the time), but getting EXTREME portability in return.
I can take my iPad and work on it almost anywhere. Waiting for the train or bus? Work on your music. Waiting in line? Work on your music. It is not likely that you would be able to do this as conveniently with a laptop, and it's probably impossible on a desktop. If you were to try to take your laptop around and do the same thing, it would be less portable and less convenient, and the battery life would likely be much less as well.
