Things like midi controller apps and streaming video apps etc rely on having a wifi network to work.. I'm wondering with those sort of things, if I tether my iPhone to my laptop and to my iPad (wifi only model), is that creating a wifi network that would allow my iPad and laptop to do the sort of things mentioned above?
I haven't really got any of those sort of apps (lemur etc) but would be interested if this worked..

I have been using my iPad 2 as a Midi controller over a wireless connection to a Windows 7 64-bit PC. I hear the setup is rather easy with Macs; with PC you need to get a free Wireless Midi manager called rtpMidi and you have to have Bonjour installed on your computer (which I hear is pretty standard, my PC already had it..). The other little bit is that although many ios music apps support a wireless Midi connection, I have only found that many do not send a "I want to connect" signal to rtpMidi... I use the ios app MidiBridge to handle this and to assign the correct IP address (not sure about Lemur on this matter, I don't use it).

I use Thumbjam and Geo synth to control VSTs in my DAW and I have found it works smoothly and has no humanly noticeable latency (aside from when things get 'hung up' and I need to hit the panic button). In cases of a wireless network that is slow and causing latency you can also set up and ad hoc network.

Not sure about video streaming...

Thanks for that info, my main question as to whether having iPad and laptop connected via iPhone tethering constitutes a workable network alas isn't answered yet.
(does this mean I'll have to try work it out myself when I get home!

Ah... Read that more closely now...

It sounds like your goal is to setup a wireless connection between your laptop and your iPad in a location with no wireless network? So why not just set up an ad hoc network? Your laptop can most likely host a session that your iPad can log into..

Unless your goal is to have access to the wider internet via 3G/4G at the same time as your wireless session... in which case, best wishes on your journey unto tetherdom!

Setting up an ad hoc network takes a bit of effort and more than a couple of steps, but I think you will find it worthwhile.

If you are working on a Mac I have nothing!
