Hey, sorry guys for some reason the file has been marked as 'private' and I'm trying to figure out how to change this. if you can't figure it out, i'll be more than happy to host it for you (if d h miltz is ok with that of course) ---- |

got mine submitted at 3am last night. Happy that I was able to come-up with something for the intellectually difficult(for me) contest this month.
It's been a challenging month for me - between crazy freakin work and my samples/projects/VST HDD going down . . . Looks like a cool, free-form contest for June Dan; will you keep a 3 minute limit again or do another wacky 30 second sprint ? :=) ---- an expert on what it feels like to be me & you are who you google http://soundcloud.com/mrnatural-1 |

Hmmmm...
I've been listening to all the submissions. I still don't have my voting finalized, but I feel this month more than others the need to justify the reasoning behind my voting criteria. From the theme description: Quote: monophony is the simplest of textures, consisting of melody without accompanying harmony. This may be realized as just one note at a time, or with the same note duplicated at the octave
Most, if not all of the submissions comply with this part, that's what most people understood it to be. However, the definition does not stop there: Quote: Monophony may not have underlying rhythmic textures, and must consist of only a melodic line.
This is where I feel many of the submitted tracks (including some of my favorites) transgressed a little bit. I understand (believe me, I wrestled with this myself when doing my track) that a purely monophonic composition could be extremely boring. I understand the temptation to add more voices to the songs in order to make it more interesting, and that was ok as long as they are all playing the same melody at the same time. The problem came when some of the voices would play only part of the melody. If you have an instrument that comes only every other note to play something of an accent over the main melody, to me that feels like a different melodic line superimposed over the first one, even if the notes that are played simultaneously are unisons or octaves. That enters into the realm of heterophony, according to the definitions in the wikipedia page linked to in the contest description. The problem is that, this month in particular, that little deviation makes all the difference between a dull track and a great one. I normally allow some leniency in theme adherence: if I really like a composition I might assign it some points even if it deviates a little bit. But because the theme this month was very constraining, for the sake of fairness I will be applying a very strict weight to the theme. Unfortunately, as I said, that leaves some of my favorite tracks with no points Anyway, these were some random thoughts in the way that I will allocate my votes this month. I will add individual comments on the tracks after I post the votes. |

OK, downloaded the nice M3U from http://kvrcontest.farlukar.cz.cc/. Here are the results of downloading the files contained - "failures" only. These automatically get marks knocked off for making my life just that little bit harder than it needs to be: http:/ /soundcloud.com/jjbiener/0512_jjbiener_enchantable/download? 0512_jjbiener_enchantable.mp3 - wrong filename (MMYY), came down as the HTML page... http:/ /soundcloud.com/evo2slo/single-string-theory/download - no filename http:/ /soundcloud.com/my-ear-bleeds-wine/1205_myearbleedswine/down load?1205_myearbleedswine.mp3 - missing track name http:/ /soundcloud.com/docjon/1205_docjon_contemplation/download?Co ntemplation.mp3 - could have use the correct filename after the '?'... /sigh/ http:/ /soundcloud.com/forw/1205-forw-mono-moon/download?monomoon.m p3 - could have use the correct filename after the '?'... /sigh/ http:/ /soundcloud.com/bzur/monolith/download - no filename http:/ /soundcloud.com/mellotronaut/1105-mellokarin-guten-tag?Guten _Tag.mp3 - wrong filename, came down as the HTML page... http: //soundcloud.com/mrnatural-1/1205_misternatural_your_particl e/download?your_particle.mp3 - could have use the correct filename after the '?'... /sigh/ http:/ /www.fileden.com/files/2010/12/20/3041984/1205_FriendlyStran ger_Stalactite.mp3 - still coming down as the GIF (What I call correct on SoundCloud: http:/ /soundcloud.com/kryptonaut/domine-abomine/download?1205_kryp tonaut_domine-abomine.mp3) (URLs further broken to stop stupid auto-player feature in KVR...) </grumpy sod mode> |

The stragglers...
MelloKarin Guten Tag This is so far out on a limb I think it's actually on the next tree! I guess it fits the theme, but one of us is not quite ready for the other Peterhud Lines_of_Fire Title fits the sounds perfectly. Very well realised ideas. tuz havefun Very original and fun track. MisterNatural YourParticle Don't know what went wrong here but it came up simply named 'untitled' Curious song. Not sure what to make of it. FriendlyStranger Stalactites Well that's a very pleasant track to finish the set. I'm guessing this was sequenced - would rather hard to maintain the timing played live... Very short. Oh dear, how to vote |
