A couple weeks ago, I wondered how they made that sound while watching an anime and hearing it. Today I decided to sit down and try to recreate it, but am left scratching my head how exactly they made it. There's really not much information on the web either about the sounds, and honestly, not much info about the Japanese sound design world at all. The sound I'm talking about for reference is:
heard at 0:05 and another version at 0:10
And another really good example found on freesound.

Anybody here have any idea how you might make this sound from scratch? I figured it was probably made from original foley recordings of sword hits/metal hits, and then processed and layered to oblivion. I'm not really sure at all though, and my attempts at making it so far and failed. I got one version where the end sounds similar, but it was still missing the beginning impact.
The little information I did find on the web leaned towards that is was a foley recording (probably a sword hit) processed on a old sampler, using heavy compression, distortion, and pitch resampling, as well as touch of reverbs and delay. One of the best comments on the web I found were:
Code:
It's real sword sound fx with various manipulated attack times (think ADSR on a sampler....they used faders on a desk to do the same thing years ago or the first samplers etc) ..layered together, then pitched up and added lots of chorus and pitch harmonization fx and a tiny amount of pre delayed reverb ...then batch recorded along with lots of other sounds back to tape for use in a library etc..
Hope that makes sense.
With DAWS this sort of thing is dead easy nowdays..
I would suggest getting some sword samples from a library and start playing around with them, adding Compression & Distortion plugins with the tops rolled off, then add chorus and pitch FX with a bit of pre delayed reverb etc...
Still, his details were vague, and I'm still at a loss on how to make it. I'm going to keep playing around with it, but anyone have any ideas?
