Hi guys. On my current project I am going for a clean but guttsy bass sound. Unfortunately I don't own a nice bass amp so I'm recording my bass direct into my interface. Wondering if there is a free bass guitar amp sim out there that would do this or should I just use a chain of fx to achieve this? If so, what do you recommend? Any help would be great, thanx

Here's one that I made, it has a lot of preamp-like qualities. I have some others on my page, basic preamp-like stuff, I don't have any dry bass amp sounds.

Depending on the actual recorded sound, a bass can often fit in a mix without being processed through an amp sim. Many times EQ and compression is enough.

I use the TSE BOD plugin (emulates a Tech 21 bass driver pedal) with Variety of Sound's BootEQ II and Thrillseeker LA compressor behind it. This is a VERY flexible chain of free effects for bass.

Thanks for thinking of us, guys!
With officially certified bass gear models from exclusive partners like Ampeg and Fender, we are usually at the top of people's lists for bass ampsim gear.
This is actually the best time to stock up on IK bass gear. Right now we have a promotion for 50% off all bass gear in the AmpliTube Custom Shop. Add the 40% off PROMO CODE to your Gear Credits purchase from our Facebook exclusive Memorial Day Weekend "stealth promotion" and it's practically free!

Ahh get the hell outta here you damn IK employees!! ;P
I'd just get Amplitube Free if I were you. Mudcat's suggestion is pretty solid too, though. You'll get some great results experimenting with that signal chain. Maybe even mix the two
Considering these sales on A3 bass gear though, it sounds like you asked that question at the right time... 50% and 40% off adds up to a nice deal, haha.

You lost me at "free"
What's the best FREE car? What's the best FREE lunch?
All joking aside yes, try AT3. Though you might be tempted to try the non "free" amps and then we'd be opening a whole can of whop worms......wouldn't we

Voxengo Boogex has some bass cab impulses embedded in it and allows you to mix DI and cab sounds. It is a free download from the Voxengo site.
I agree with earlier posters that eq and compression of DI bass can work very well if you want a clean sound. Using some saturation or overdrive can get you closer to the amplified character.

Clearly, TSE AUdio B.O.D. (which is a tech21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI). There was another "free" SansAmp, but I lost track of it with a HDD crash where I stored all data about such emulations.
And, there is the "Solid State Bass Amp" in IKM AT3 Custom Shop, though I do miss the once mag-bundled AMPEG one.
And, then we have Line6 PODfarm Free which comes with an AMPEG SVT and B-15A, sadly the AVALON Presamp is not included, it is great for bass sounds.
But else, yes - if you want a clean but gutsy bass, just the right EQ, proper compression and slight (minimal) distortion. This rips everything apart in a mix.

Brian, is it possible to use Jam Points and the 40% Promo code at the same time?

Teksonic, sorry, no. Redeeming JamPoints generates a unique promo code, which is how you get your discount. But you can only use one promo code at a time.
On a different note, I'm embarrassed to say I overlooked the awesome officially certified MB-150S bass combo from our esteemed partner Gallien-Krueger! If you want a tight punchy tone for some real in-your-face bass, this one will deliver.
