hi,
I am looking for software to replace my Boss SE-70 for clean non amped non cabinet guitar tones..........I am only looking for clean DI sounds with great choruses, phasers, flangers, wah wah for my electric guitars..

I have guitar rig 5, amplitube 3 and th-1 and th-2 and line 6 stuff and of course steinberg's amp whatever it is called and soundtoys and uhbik etc etc etc........and none of them do clean DI guitar tones well or as well as my boss se-70 for my tastes...........

I recently put back my noisy se-70 into my workflow cause I couldn't find any software to replace it for the types of sounds mentioned above, but would be happy to take it out again if I find the software to replace it........

I guess what I really need is the ultimate guitar stomp pedals/modules in software version with emphasis more on the clean tones that distortion etc............... which ones have I overlooked?

Not sure about anything software wise but to replace your old Boss unit I can say that one of these would definately cover your needs as I have tried them, Maybe something like a POD HD (Haven't tried any in that range but it does include thier M-Series effects and they are good). Here is what I can recommend FWIW -

TC Electronic's Nova System is really good, If you shop around should be had for way less than RRP: http://www.tcelectronic.com/novasystem.asp and/or if you do not mind rack stuff with a MIDI board then TC's G-Series is really good

Line 6's M-series stompbox/rack modelling things are pretty good, Probably the M-9 or even M-13 for more flexability I would think:

Again shop around for deals, The M13 is listed as the same price as some of the POD HD series some places and that is abit out of whack with things

Boss have released thier GT-100, So the GT-10 should be dropping or already has dropped in price alot, Especially people wanting to upgrade on ebay for example

Although I have a GT-10, I did have a GT-8 and it was alot easier to program i found again FWIW. Boss ME-25 can be had for cheap and for abit more the ME-70

Zoom seem to have upped thier game, Have not tried any of thier new stuff and am only going off of what I have heard, The G5 looking like a good one.

Behringer's X V-Amp LX1-X, Dirt cheap but knowing the V-AMP Pro rack things well they are actually really good value for money.

Vox do units with multi-fx on-board and as much as I like the ToneLab LE, SX and ST...The effects are crap basically I find. However the same company whom owns both ala Korg, Did one called the Korg Toneworks AX3000G and should be able to find one cheap, Effects were alot better in that one I found but the pre-amp models/High-gain stuff awful!

I presume You have a good quality DI Box already which you are using instead of the HiZ input on your interface, As the included HiZ instrument inputs are I have found to be mostly abit rubbish and a good (don't mean spending a fortune at all either) DI box into mic/line input works alot better, I have no proof of that but my ears. If for whatever reason you have not got a decent DI box then perhaps it would be worth picking one up and re-trying all the plug-ins, Boss do have a certain sound to thier pedals/multi-fx so if it is that which you really love then going with a newer, less noisey Boss unit will work out best for your own needs

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention Fender's Mustang floorboard, So far from what I have heard it is another one worth considering/alook, One really good feature is the expression pedal, It allows you to rapidly assign whatever parameter to it and it goes left to right as well as up and down (actually it may let you assign more than one parameter but I can not say for sure) and you get the full on FUSE software for editing...etc.

I think that is most I can think of which I am aware of covered that I have tried and/or have an eye on/heard and seen good things about

wow.....thanks will re-read in detail.......I have bought so many line 6 stuff and never used one of them in any project....but will read the other stuff... did think about the boss gt-100 or gt-10..

ok re-read and did quick listening to some...of course everybody has distorted or driven tones......but you are most likely right.... if I am going to go hardware it should be boss as I do love their 'sound'.
yes I use an atlas pro juggernaut as my DI.

Could you post an audio example of what you're looking to do?
I'm sure it could be done with AmpliTube 3, by bypassing the cab and perhaps the amp model too, or you could use a super clean model like the Metal Clean T or Jazz Amp 120.

I can do some audio posts tmrrw. .. but I do have amplitube 3 and did all of that and used your stomp pedals...well granted I don't own all now you have the store, but those that came with amplitube 3. I tried all the choruses, all the wah wah's all the phasers, and all the flangers and wasn't close to me...

I used to swear by my Boss VF-1 which seems to be to be pretty similar to the SE-70. Super little box and can be had pretty cheap. Noisy? I never thought so at all, at least the VF-1 wasn't. That stereo chorus.. Roland knows how to do it, that's for sure. The "amp models" or as they say COSM are pretty horrible. There was some cool distortion effects though, especially the lo-fi bit reduction stuff.

So where was I? RIGHT. Replacing one. I'd look at using a combo of different plugs. The most "analog hardware" (which the SE-70 sure isn't) sounding plug I have is Stillwell Audio Oligarc. Love that on guitar.

Fabfilter's Saturn and Timeless would be also included in there as would Audio Damage's Liquid, Vapor and Fluid. I don't own them yet but Valhalla's plugs are all really good sounding to me. I'm surprised you didn't like the Uhbiks.

So, take that with a grain of salt as it's coming from a man who just sank $2000 on a pure hardware guitar amp/fx system. Not that I wasn't getting great tones from the software I mentioned, or even just Amplitube or a combo, but I wanted that "extra" bit.

hi ZC thanks for the response....yes the VF-1 came after, don't quite remember why I didn't upgrade, there was something changed about it that I didnt like... to clarify it isn't that I don't like the Uhbiks, (or soundtoys and the other etc) its just for me they weren't a replacement for the SE-70.....but I use them in other ways..... will try out the stillwell audio stuf...... and some of the other stuff you mentioned. I did try Valhalla's uberwhateveritiscalled, but that didn't do it for me either.....Saturn is a saturator if I remember correctly... tbh also back in the days when I used hardware stuff I didnt' remember the SE_70 being noisy, but when I stick it in my otherwise mostly ITB studio (except for mic, and mic pre=s), it sure as hell is noisy compared to the non-noise from the others.....and if I recall correctly you have been trading in software for hardware? So I may be a little more 'sensitive' to noise than you

... hope no offense is taken.

What did you buy out of curiosity?

I agree, distortion, especially heavy distortion, seems far easy to get right than the clean tones.

@ghettosynth: yes, and I don't understand why.... I guess most guitar players want the distorted tones so manufacturers oblige....

@izonin: will listen to the audiodamage stuff. If I recall they don't have demos but offer money back guarantee? Although I always feel 'funny' when I basically am saying I don't like your stuff, can I get my money back please

Well, noise is always an issue when you're dealing with outboard gear, of course and even more so because of the guitar factor. My guitars are pretty good, as guitars go, in the noise front, but maybe I'm less bothered by it too.

I wonder if your noise issue could be coming from something else that's changed? don't have any direct experience with the SE-70 but I don't remember the VF-1 being noisy at all unless you were doing things with the (crappy) built in compressor or the bad amp models with high gain, but that's to be expected to some degree and the VF-1 seemed to be as good as any in that dept.

I bought a Kemper Profiling Amplifer and a Pod HD500. My idea is to use the Pod as a midi controller and some extra effects for the Kemper, but if that doesn't work out I'll return the Pod and go Blackstar HT-5 Dual>Kemper>Lexicon MPX-1 and use a Behringer FCB-1010 as a controller. The other possibility is if the Kemper doesn't blow me away to go Pod HD500/DT25 into a Revira Silent Sister iso cab, but I'm hoping to not have to deal with that level of rigmarole. (with an emphasis on "rig!")
