Attention, fellow time wasters: I need your help please :D

My employer has installed a new computer system and I can no longer use LunchBox Battles to (cough) "make phat beatz" during my lunch break :(

Is there anything out there that's similar? A quick 'n dirty Windows-compatible standalone beat maker I can run from a memory stick?

...or can anyone recommend a CPU-light all-singing all-dancing sketchpad-type VSTi I could *make* standalone using Savihost?

(The new computers are RDP/thin client terminals rather than desktops. It's possible to run Reaper from a USB stick but it's veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow and relative path information seems to get screwed up: my thumb drive shows up as the thoroughly Unix-y "sdb2"...)

Any help greatly appreciated, TIA.

Note to my employer: You'll note I said lunchbreak :tu: :D :tu: :D

EnergyXT? I think it can run portable and has a kind of drumrack (not used it for a while though)

my current lunchtime toy is IL's Groove Machine. great fun, but I dont think it'd be portable.

Hey gamecat666, thanks for responding :)

Something like that - an all-in-one groovebox-type instrument - would fit the bill. But it's got to be portable, I'm afraid: no installation rights :shrug:

Any other suggestions...?

Psycle runs from a memory stick, I had the same problem as you, loosing admin rights of my work computer.

Psycle is a modular music environment, but can also function as a simple VST host if you just need to quickly load a VST for a quick jam on the keyboard, and has a tracker for song making, I like it a lot :love:

'Poise' might be worth a look - could be portable, but doesnt have any sequencing. try combining poise+ the above post? :)

Hammerhead Rhythm Station is a free TR-909-like drum computer program featuring six separate channels, 29 built-in drum sounds, six complete breakbeats and the possibility to import six samples of your own.

also try MuLab Free, i'm pretty sure it's portable.

@Numanoid: Hmmmmm. Psycle looks very interesting. But I'm not very good with trackers and tracker-style interfaces :-/ I'm sure I could learn...but not without investing a bit of time in it. Which kind of defeats the object of the exercise, TBH! I think I'm better off sticking to x0x-style step sequencers or piano roll...

@thecontrolcentre: thanks, that looks cool - I'll check it out!

@bpblog: that's a good idea - I'll check that out too!
