So, theres alot of talk about Live 9 and whats going to happen with it.

I read somewhere that it will utilize better CPU stuff and 64-bit.

Im just curious....

I have 4Gb of RAM in my Macbook Pro, but only a 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo CPU.

Does this mean, Live 8 isnt using all the power i have in my Macbook Pro?

Again, im just curious. So far, Live 8 hasnt misbehaved on me....but if its not utilizing all the power i have, then i guess ill be upgrading to 9.

Live is using all your hardware. Live 8 uses any core it can find including hyperthreaded cores.

A 64bit DAW will allow 16GB or more depending on what OS you are using.
3.2 - 4GB is the max for a 32bit DAW.

On Windows 7 64bit Live 8 crashes when it gets to 3.2GB in size. If you have 4Gb of RAM and taking into account your drivers and OS take up ram then you are not missing out on anything. I don't think Ableton have ever mentioned a live 9 or any of it's features. If its not 64bit though a lot of uses will go nuts.

@mr president

You might have to take your ram out and replace it with larger ram if all slots are filled already. Some motherboards need a bios update for some RAM stick sizes. if you want loads of help with computer upgrades and building go here http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=39

Really you should have

64bit CPU
64bit OS
64bit DAW
64bit plugins

But if your on Windows 7 64bit theirs a way around a 32bit DAWs limitations install Jbridge and upto 16GB RAM can be made use of. Massive RAM is only needed if you are using massive sample instruments.

If your project takes up 2GB RAM and you have 16GB of ram then most of your RAM is doing nothing. If you have 4GB RAM and your project gets to 3.2GB in Live then it crashes.

Jbridge will run your plugins with their own RAM address space allowing a project in a 32bit DAW to be massive I have one thats 9GB in size with Ableton Live 8. Jbridge will also run 64bit plugins in a 32bit DAW or the other way around but many plugins dont like it and crash straight away.

The 64bit plugins below work in Live 8.2 and 8.3 with Jbridge.

Omnisphere 64bit
Trilian 64bit
Kontakt 64bit

64bit Plugins that dont like running in Live with Jbridge are:-

All U-He Plugins
All Slate Digital plugins

If you have enough CPU cores live will run each track on it's own core but if you only have one track then you may only see two cores in use.

Some tracks will have more load than others so not all cores will show as being used the same amount. Some cores will be running more than one track if you have more tracks than cores.

The CPU meter in live is only a guide if you get crackle when its only at 70% CPU usage it doesn't mean your CPU is not being fully used. Many users report that on the forums as proof of Live not using all the CPU but the meter is not accurate as to whats going on in the CPU.

Use the activity monitor app to see what's going on with cores.

done an 11 track mix each with a synth or soundtoys effect.

four cores i7 hyperthreding off 59% CPU in Live 8 meter sound is perfect.

Re enabled hyperthreading I've got 8 cores if you count the virtual cores from hyperthreading two of those are doing nothing one is doing very little.

CPU usage meter is much higher 78 and im getting crackle. I guess this is a virtual core trying to handle something that needs a proper core.

I normally have hyperthreading off because it does this and because with it off I can overclock more.

How do you like it so far? It was really confusing to me (Cubase user)...especially the midi editor.

I also have hyper-threading off on my i7 950 because of Live terrible performances when it's activated. I really hope Live 9, if it ever get released, will solve that out.
