USB ports dilemma :^\

Hi! I bought a new laptop (Toshiba Tecra, i7 processor). I intend to use this laptop as my new DAW, to which I'll have to connect my Novation ReMote SL61 controller keyboard and my newly acquired FocusRite Scarlett 18i6 interface. The laptop has 2 normal USB 2.0 +1 composite USB2/eSATA port and 1 USB 3.0 port. One USB 2.0 port is already in use by the mouse (I don't like to use laptop touchpads). I would like to spare the composite USB2/eSATA for an external eSATA drive that I'll buy for audio only -- so I'm left with only 1 USB2.0 and 1 USB3.0 ports, while both the Remote SL61 and the Scarlett are USB2.0. I've read somewhere that it's OK to connect USB1.1 equipment to USB2.0 ports, but I'm not sure if the same is true concerning 2.0 equipment connected to 3.0 ports and I'm afraid to coonnect my expensive SL61 (or the new Scarlett 18i6) to the USB 3.0 port. I thought of using a USB hub, but I don't know if it will be OK, performance wise, to have the Scarlett 18i6 audio interface connected to a hub, or even the SL61, that receives power through USB (unlike the Scarlett that has it's own power suply). So, what's the best way to connect all this?... maybe I should use the USB 3.0 for the mouse?... seems like a waste though... any ideas?
I'm kind of stuck with this dilemma... Thanks in advance for your advice.

Tried a few other, cheaper powered hubs, none of which worked.

You're fine. Been using 3.0 ports on 2.0 devices for awhile.

In USB 3.0 dual-bus architecture is used to allow both USB 2.0 (HIGH Speed/LOW Speed/FULL Speed) and USB 3.0 (Super Speed) operations to take place simultaneously, thus providing backward compatibility. Connections are such that they also permit forward compatibility, that is, run USB 3 devices on USB 2.0 ports. The structural topology is the same, consisting of a tiered star topology with a root hub at level 0 and hubs at lower levels to provide bus connectivity to devices.
