So I've been trying to record a Roland synth module. It's the jv 1010, which doesn't have usb for computers only a computer connection for a 'computer cable' which I don't even know what's called. It also has midi in/out/thru and audio in/out.

I'm using one midi cable with ins and outs, two audio cables and one audio interface which connects and charges via usb or computer.

They're connected in the following way;

1) The midi keyboard connects to the JV via midi cable (out to in)

2) The JV then connects to the audio interface via audio cables (i.e. not midi).

3) Finally the audio interface connects to the computer via USB.

Should this be a workable setup for recording the JV module?

Yep!

You may want to connect a second midi cable if you want to use a software editor for the JV.

What do you want to record?
Do you want record midi, audio or both?

If you want to record midi or both you need to connect both the keyboard and the JV to your computer.
One way to connect is to set the keyboard to your computer, and connect your JV through midi thru on your keyboard to midi in on your JV.
When you play on your keyboard you sending the midi signal to your PC and send it back to your JV thru your keyboard.

To record audio you need to connect JV's audio output to audio input on your soundcard.

Well, the connection I'm talking about is the one that describes the midi out from the sequencer to midi in on keyboard. What also should also be is a midi out from keyboard to midi in on the sequencer. USB connection between the keyboard and the computer is the same as midi in and out between the keyboard and the computer/sequencer

Yes. USB connection = USB interface is built-in in the keyboard.
But if you use that, I don't think the Midi Thru will work.

The OP doesn't say if he want's to record Midi in his PC.

On the Emu X-board which I have, must midi thru be set manually, due to it is something that does not happen automatically.
I belive that is how it works on most usb/midi keyboards. Otherwise you can always connect the midi out on the sound card to your JV in, if you have a sound card with midi connection

Thanks for the quick answers.

Not sure if I explained well enough. I've now tried the connection setup in my original post. That is: Korg's MIDI out to Roland JV's MIDI in. Roland's Audio outputs to the audio interface's audio inputs. The audio interface's usb straight to the computer. Using MIDI-OX I only see the audio interface as output but no inputs. No matter where plug my earphone into I can't hear any sound, whether to the JV or the audio interface. So it means this setup is wrong, isn't working?

As for midi or audio, the most important right now is that I can get the sounds of the JV into the computer so I can record it.

It is hard to know what's going on without knowing your exact hardware, but I will make some assumptions. If your Korg is a controller only, it probably only has the USB and a MIDI Out port. I have a JV-1010, so I know how that works. The audio interface is a question, but let's see what we can do.

First, you have to see if the JV is receiving MIDI. There is a small LED indicator on the front panel that shows when it is receiving MIDI. I have to believe that when you play the Korg, that light is not flashing on the JV. If this is true, that means the Korg can't use the USB and the MIDI port at the same time.

So working from that assumption, plug the Korg's USB into the computer. Plug the audio interface's USB into the computer. (Make sure you have all appropriate drivers in place and your DAW software can see these two devices). Then plug the MIDI Out from the audio interface into the MIDI In on the JV. Of course also plug in the audio in/out into the appropriate audio ports on the interface.

When you open the DAW, find the setting that echos MIDI In to MIDI Out. Try the keyboard, and make sure the JV is receiving MIDI data. Then check the interface to see if it is receiving audio from the JV. At that point you should be able to record and play back MIDI and Audio.

If anything I've assumed is wrong, let me know and we can try again.

oh, the midi controllers is a microkorg (no usb), and the audio interface is presonus audiobox.

I checked out the picture link from above, it suggest I've done things in reverse. I've plugged the cable from the microkorgs midi Out to the JV's midi Through, but in the picture it says the midi controller should have the midi cable in its 'in' slot.

Connect the microkorgs MIDI out to the JV midi in ... then audio out of the JV to inputs on the presonus interface. The microkorg needs to be sending MIDI on the same channel the JV is set to receive on.

Have you checked midi settings on your computer, Jv and the Micro Korg?

Everything should be assigned to different MIDI channels so they can understand on what channel they will receive and send. The only thing I can advise you is to read the manuals into separate units that describe the midi settings.

The same MIDI channel you mean! The JV should be receiving the same midi channel as the Korg is sending, or 'Omni'.

No, this is wrong. The Korg should be sending on the same channel that the JV is receiving, otherwise it won't work.
