Can you suggest a cheap descent quality cables? BALANCED or UNBALANCED? My setup requires only a 2-5 feet cables.

Go to the nearest music shop and ask for a bog-standard mic cable he'd give to his sister. They should not even have the terrible low quality ones in stock. You won't notice any audio quality differences. Cable is cable, just some conductors with isolation and some plugs.

Should cost around $10 or $15 me thinks. Shopping local saves you the postage costs and helps local economy. You could buy plugs and cable at any electronics store: $5 for a Neutrik plug and $1 for a meter of cable, so DIY is not even more economical (but fun to do if you have a soldering iron)

I think 5m is the minimum length. It's funny how you really need that just to get from the wall to the middle of a small room.

NB: XLR cables are balanced by definition. If you find an unbalanced XLR cable, I'd call that a faulty one.

Im buying a Roland Quad-Capture... does it matter if it's XLR to XLR or XLR to Jack?

Just use XLR-XLR cables. The 1/4" jacks are usually for instruments (guitars etc) not for microphones. Chances are that by inserting a jack it switches to a different preamp than the proper mic preamp.
