i put a different sound card into the machine; and am hearing things much differently. do the snares (too much) dominate the mix here? the snares seem to give the 'punches' in the waveform.

with the new sound card, things are definitely louder in general, and the bass is much easier/clearer to hear; even through these cheap headphones. it makes me want to go back and remix 'everything' previous to this. lol

wow, another whirlwind of sonic mayhem. Snare sounded fine to me; the bass could use some help
to my ears.

The snares should give the punches in the waveform. That is unless you do like most people nowadays and make your waveform flat as a pancake! I was wondering where the vocals were. Honestly this is way too mainstream man, you really should try to do something different LOL not!!!

I think I would do something with that snare though, it does seem to need a little work, I am not sure how I would go about fixing it though, I would just try stuff, it seems a little harshg sounding or something ,hard to explain, sorry I cannot explain better. Also I think the vocals could sit in the mix a little better.

well, i've raised the bass up.

as for the snare, one problem is that it's two separate drum samples. the first-half snare has that sort of 'snare' sound to it... a bit of 'fizz' or 'sizzle'. the 2nd half snare is more 'punchy and without sizzle', much like a tom. i don't know about the first half snare as much; it sounds ok. the 2nd half snare though... maybe it's way too punchy. maybe a 'cut' somehwere in the snare range of that 2nd sample would 'fix it'.

the vocals might yet ride above the mix, but when the bass was raised; it seemed like the vocals began to 'better sit' within the mix... to the point where the vocals were actually raised a tad here.

I would like to know what the old and new soundcards are. I think that this is your cleanest/clearest mix yet. The drums are really punchy, and now that it has been pointed out, I think I prefer the snare in the first half. The vocals are nice and clear. I love that guitar at the end.

seismic, in contrast with what had previously been the generic (intel?) onboard sound; the card is now a 'soundblaster xtreme hi-fi'. the card is over 3 years old; but even so, it changed the way everything sounds.

i've got to think it probably changes the quality of the renderings from the host as well. i mean, when rendering, the host doesn't operate in a vacuum does it? doesn't it rely on the audio chipset?

(there is the option for 'rendering through the ASIO device', but i've never used that; it's always been set to the 'audio card' (or in this case, onboard chipset as it had been). as a matter of fact; if memory serves; the 'rendering through the ASIO device' option has never actually worked when tried.)

it's encouraging to hear that the change of sound chipsets is noticeable in this initial rendering.

As far is I know, rendering is performed entirely within the CPU and the audio interface is not used. The souncard would have an effect on the quality of the audio heard from your computer (and would affect any mixing decisions made as a result of hearing that audio), and would also affect the quality of any audio recorded via the sound card.

When I first added the Pod Studio-UX2 to my old computer (whose onboard audio interface was a Realtek), I noticed a slight improvement in the perceived audio playback quality although I was using the headphone output to drive my Polk speakers. Up until that time, I had never used the onboard audio interface for recording. When I bought my KRK monitors, the difference in playback quality (and volume) was immediately apparent.

Maybe the difference is due to a Sequencer parameter that affects the rendering.

I can't remember when I switched to ASIO drivers. I think it was before I got the Pod Studio.

indeed, i checked the renoise forum, and rendering is definitely not affected by the soundcard.

oh, and it looks like 'soundblaster xtreme hi-fi' is not at all the bees knees; but it sure is a step up from the onboard... apparently 'gravis something or other' are really good cards.

Well, sir, MrBlitz. It's not the style of music that I personally listen to nor perform, but it is a pretty kool compilation of interesting "distressed" sounds. The thing is, I find it very nicely analogue-sounding, and that always scores high marks with me . . . lol.

I like where the bass sits in the mix . . .
