Audio Damage Axon. Problem with the way it transmits midi note data.

Do you use Axon as rhythm generator, and record the midi data Axon transmits, into your DAW to edit and come up with new ideas?

I have a problem with the way the Audio Damage Axon plugin transmits midi note messages which makes it virtually impossible to record and use this data to trigger Axon or other plugins when it is used as a rhythm generator.

Quite simply, why doesn't Axon have the option of transmitting a note message every time a voice is triggered in the same way as it receives MIDI note data - permanently assigned to the whole notes C4 through B4?


From the Axon manual:-
Receiving MIDI notes:- Axon's seven voices are permanently assigned to the whole notes C4 through B4

Sending MIDI Notes:- The VST versions of Axon transmit a MIDI note message every time a voice is triggered. The MIDI note's pitch is set by the voice's Pitch control.


So Axon will transmit a midi note message based on the pitch of the voice triggered. So, you programme a voice which has a pitch of d-1. You programme a pattern in Axon that includes this voice. You record this pattern into your DAW. You then play it back only to find that, because that particular note has a pitch of d-1 but has been permanently assigned within Axon to receive on a different midi note, it will not trigger.

If you have more than one voice within Axon with a pitch of d-1, then you will have more problems. Because Axon will transmit a midi note message based on the pitch of the voice triggered, you will have Axon transmitting a d-1 note message every time a voice with a pitch of d-1 is triggered.

I will probably get in touch with Audio Damage to ask them about this. But I thought it might be worth checking out peoples' opinions here first.

What are you trying to do? Play each voice chromatically on your keyboard? I don't think Axon is ment for this. You can only trigger each voice like a drum machine as far as I know.

Hi there KungKrille. This is one of those subjects where, unless you have actually used the product extensively and read the manual, it is very difficult to understand. Please do not take that as a put down. I am no expert myself with Axon and I don't know your situation. Do you use Axon as rhythm generator, and record the midi data Axon transmits, into your DAW to edit and come up with new ideas? Don't you find that the way Axon transmits and receives midi data makes it difficult, if not impossible, to create rhythms within Axon, record this midi data into your DAW and then use this midi data to then trigger Axon (and other plugins such as Battery)?


So you create a rhythm in Axon. Record this data into your DAW. Switch off Axon's transport controls by selecting "int". Axon's sequencer will now not work when you hit play on your DAW. When you hit play on your DAW the data that you recorded into your DAW from Axon can now be sent to Axon to trigger it's voices. Except it won't. Because what Axon transmits it does not receive, as indicated below:-

Axon receives MIDI notes to trigger each voice like this:-

Axon transmits MIDI notes each time a voice is triggered like this:-

Using Axon as a rhythm generator, I find this method very frustrating and unworkable. Why doesn't Axon have the option of transmitting a note message every time a voice is triggered in the same way as it receives MIDI note data - permanently assigned to the whole notes C4 through B4?

I use Axon to generate melodies mostly. I mess a bit with the neurons and then record the MIDI output with which I control other synths. I have never thought of using those MIDI clips to control Axon externally as I don't need to. If I want the Axon synths I use the built-in sequencer.
