So what's a good slicer/beat detection thing these days?

What's out there that's good? Maybe I want to make a mashup. Don't want to buy a DAW, already have a couple.

And is Audition v6 any good at this? They claim with v6 to have beat detection and seamless looping ability. How good is it?

I don't know if you have Ableton Live, because you said you've got a couple of DAWs. Why not use the integrated transient detection? And then you could slice to midi. Or what do you mean by "beat detection"?

Just going to say the same sort of thing, buy a Live intro licence, if you put a WTB: on the 'For Sale and Want's' forum, I'm sure some one may have a licence to sell you. One wss sold last week for £25.00 I nearly bought it just for the hell of it, but I already own various versions of Live including the suite. :wink:

'Recycle' used to be the programe of choice, but's it's quite expensive really, again you may be able to talk someone out of a licence.

i havent used a slicer as intuitive and precise as Geist.

The slicer in Renoise is pretty great, and brilliantly integrates with it's step sequencer. I've been Rewiring it into Bidule quite a bit lately without any problems.

+1 Perhaps over featured/priced for the OP's request althrough if you pick up Computer Music this month and install the CM Lite edition of it then the upgrade fee to the full package is around £80 which for what it can do, is rather a bargin.

Oh, hey thanks all for your sharp responses. Have not made up my mind on anything. But this is not the first time I wished I had a copy of Live. ... maybe someday ... Cheers! And never heard of Geist until now, either, thanks!

PS, just found my old copy of Beatcreator! Never thought it did a good job of really finding beats but it was fun to play with. I bought it on CD when they were still in business! ;-)

Geist is mucho flexible.
You can create quantize points with sensitivity - bit like how you might in Rex files by the props, but you can audition in real time and then change later. (Does sir require an 1/8th or a whole 1/16th? - Ohh suits you sir ;-)).

This and the fact that you can take already created loops in the browser and choose the auto load/and/or/auto slice feature. For patterns and sounds alike.



But never forget that Energy XT2 has some great slicing facilities, by beat or by hitpoint.

Plus it does load .rex files, or is that .rx2 files - I can't remember now.

But apart from that (though including):

You can quantize them of course, but you choose quantisation - 1/8 - 1/16 etc... And you can elasticate it by pitch or tempo - gives some very different effects sometimes. In fact, is it the Elastique Pro or normal algo that Xt uses, or maybe another one? Who cares. It's dope, my man. You'll be funkier than James Brown's Uncle. Er, you weren't making orchestral oboe music were you? ;-)

You can even slice the midi! And random re-arrange it! Sounds funky, but works well for broken up break beatz!

This is in Geist btw.

Check out the lock in place functionality at the bottom left as well for keeping either hits or patterns in their place when you change things about.

One effect can lead to very different effects to the other.

You can keep the broken break beats from one auto-sliced pattern and have them imposed on another pattern you choose. Or Take the pattern you extracted from another breakbeat and impose that on some samples from another kit or another breakbeat or whatever you choose to put into the slots </franki howerd>

Just check the Geist manual. Or rather the forum. I explain it badly, but they will know exactly what I mean. Pm me if you have difficulty figuring it out. I have it bookmarked somewhere.


Just experiment! But don't overlook what XT2 can do with it's real time stretching....


Be warned though that there is a potentially speaker busting/ear busting bug in the curve in/curve out facility on wavs. Sometimes if you just ease in by 10 milliseconds then jumnp to the same part eased in by 10 milliseconds, not just your ears, but your speaker cones will pop. Your family won't thankyou either.


Be very careful about looping any samples that you have chopped up in XT2 that have fade in.out points.


It really could damage your ear/speakers - it is that bad - you have been warned.

Really forget about XT2 - Geist is the daddy. LinPlug RMV does super beat slicing too, but I want a personal signed letter from Peter LinPlug when I figure out how to do it. A BSc at least, but a PhD would be nice.

Yes Slicex is pretty amazing. When I get my new glasses, I'll be able to use it. It's awesome. I'm sure some of the younger chaps on the forum will propound its abilities.

Is it not funny that has my screens get bigger (24") the vsts get smaller?

But maybe that's just me ;-)

Perhaps I should just go back to 800*600?

The CM version they did of Guru sold me.
I ended up buying not just the full version of Guru, but Geist as well. Oh and the DCAM mob. Even bought the BFD eco as well, plus a few expanders.

Damn fine company. Damn fine support. Damn fine products.

I think they call it brand loyalty.

Get the CM version.

I've made up so many custom kits with BFD eco, it's not true.

And check out the free .pfd help files they give for free to see if it meets your needs.


It's the mutt's whiskers, er, I think ;-)
