I got way more than I need but not as much as I want

My favorites by far are Omnipshere, Nexus and Waves

Just compare the price of a -good- 100€ synthesizer with going to see ten movies or eating 20 hamburgers at your fastfood - Without the coffee- , and see what will change your life and whats left after that.

Some movies might change your life, and eventually some music, and musical instruments as well.

As for hamburgers ...

I think there's always going to be an element of not being happy with what I have as there's always going to be the opportunity to buy an instrument that is slightly better quality than the one I currently have. I can't see that ever going away.

I've got much more than I'll ever need. Lots of crayons in my box. I DO NOT NEED anything else.

However, I keep accumulating stuff for a variety of reasons:

1. Changing technology - My current excuse is x64 upgrades or substitutes. However, this isn't the only reason. There was a time, for example, when Melodyne was the only viable choice in that space. Stuff gets better/cheaper/faster, and I will change stuff out to stay current.

2. Upgrades - I will almost ALWAYS upgrade my existing gear to stay current, even if it's a paid upgrade. A product will really have to disappoint me before I make the decision not to continue on the upgrade path.

3. Sales, no-brainers, beta-test NFR's, Freebie promos - This is my biggest downfall. Years ago, after paying (slightly discounted) retail prices for Komplete 2, Sampletank 2 and Cubase SX, I rarely, if ever, paid full price for anything else again. Just about anything I've wanted has eventually been severely discounted to the point where it doesn't make sense NOT to pick it up. Or, now, since I'm a customer of so many companies, I'm eligible for some really great promos and deep, deep discounts. Or, the odd no-brainer pops up (I'm looking at you, Etch!).

So, while I'm still acquiring a lot of gear every year, overall, I'm spending a lot less than I used to.

cheers

Right now the lack is with me, not my gear. I threw myself off electronic music for a while and need to just spend a lot of time noodling, erm, researching, to get back where I can make things I want to listen to ever again.

Allow me to note that the day after I posted that, I bought Plogue Chipsounds and I don't regret it at all. Very Happy

While the posts have mostly been about soft synths, I have tended to have the same problem with real instruments.

I have that to a lesser extent. I own a number of hardware instruments I've done too little or even nothing with -- a Moog Etherwave theremin, an electric violin, a Korg Wavedrum, a cheap electric guitar, the whole set of Meinl Spark shakers, a marching xylophone, a melodica, an electric kazoo...

At least with hand drums there's a good chance I'm going to sit down and jam with them a fair amount, even if I've recorded them very little.

I think about this all the time.

I hate that I think about this all the time.

I am in a quantum state of being happy with what I have and wanting more at the same time. I would not claim I am "done", though, because I don't have any hardware synths at the moment, and I think that's... wrong. I've loved synths since I was 15 and, dammit, I should own a few.

Here's what I think my rig "should" be:

    Spectrasonics' stuff
    Diva
    Largo
    ElectraX
    Komplete
    D-CAM*
    Plectrum
    Novation ReMote 49
    Alesis ControlPad
    Virus TI
    Korg Z1
    Microwave XT

* I'm including Tremor with D-CAM, since it uses the same engine. Perhaps that's cheating.

I already own most of that stuff... I'm short three VSTs and the three hardware synths. That said, I also own a half-dozen other synths that I've decided I don't need and I've put away (Synthmaster, Rapture, Microtonic, Predator, Surge, Morphine, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few).

The thing is, of course, money. I've just come out of a 15-year marriage where my ex basically threw money away, and left me precious little to build a studio with. I could occasionally scrape together $200 for a VST, but never more than that. That ended up being a very bad thing, because I would occasionally (about twice a year) buy a VST... and thus ended up with a moderately large collection, most of which I didn't need. If I were smart, I would have socked the money away and just gotten a Virus or something. I suspect I would have been happier that way, and probably close to "done" by now. Unfortunately, now I'm sitting on a bunch of purchases that I don't use and can't sell. [shrug]

...Now I'm paying off child support, spousal support, 15 years of debt, and an expensive car she bought but didn't need and thus didn't take. ....all this to the tune of 2700 a month. (Sorry, I know I'm not supposed to say that figure in public. Fortunately, none of you know me personally.)

That ends in about three years. So I'm choosing to be happy with what I have until then... but as soon as those floodgates open, I'm worried I'm going to go nuts and end up with something like Cikira's studio. I hope not. That's overkill, and I'd like to keep things minimal.

...So, yeah, I'd like to be happy with the list above. But, really, I would love to add a Nord Wave. ...and a Kurzweil (K2500 or PC3LE or something). ...and a WaveDrum. ...and Audjoo Helix. ...and KLC Wavestation. ...and Diversion, when it friggin' comes out for OS X. ...and a Nord Rack 3. ...and a Nord Rack 1, for that matter. ...and, oh yeah, I'd love a Quasimidi Polymorph, if I could ever find one for sale... ...and don't forget the JD-800! ...and I would get a kick out of a Korg M3M...

[shakes head]

I'm doomed.

I don't have an arsenal and if I did have an arsenal I wouldn't put my musical instruments in it.

I have to say that I'm a little surprised that there are only two votes for "You can never have enough free instruments."

I thought there were more fans of free (and only free) plugs. Question
