ValhallaFreqEcho: Add new delay sync times, or keep the same?

Keep the same sync times. I need FreqEcho to be compatible with old projects

Hi Sean. I am a long time user of FreqEcho from the very first version. I am very pleased with it's development, and thanks for making it!

If you insist on breaking preset compatibility, then maybe now is the time to add a few things?
I use it a lot without feedback as a standard shifter, but it has delay of .01ms? I guess that is okay, but if it is not necessary could that delay be removed? I would like to be able to shift an undelayed signal and then feedback into the delay. As of now it cannot do this, but it would be the strongest change and most rewarding.

True stereo would be two cool

And if you could extend the range of the filters, that would be appreciated.

For the record, I voted for the new sync times, but it's not that important to me, so I won't be disappointed either way. Really looking forward to all of these:

I'm working on a ValhallaFreqEcho update. The current changes:

- 64 bit versions for OSX and Windows
- Knob behavior defaults to up/down, instead of circular
- Font changed to Futura
- GUI changes for improved legibility
- Resizable GUI

Now isn't the time. I want to get this out the door ASAP, and get back to work on the unpleasant work needed for the next plugin. Actually, I DON'T want to get back to work on that unpleasant work, but I need to, so I should wrap up the FreqEcho stuff and put a bow on it.
And if you could extend the range of the filters, that would be appreciated.
OK, that's a 5 minute change right there. I'll look into it.

I really like Freqecho a lot. It's the only plugin I have that can sound very similar to my ELK EM-4 tape echo. I'm all for these extra upgrades. One thing I did notice with the plug is that it dips in volume when inserted. Is there anyway to have it not effect the volume so much? Either way, I definitely am a big fan.

The dry signal shouldn't have a different gain. If the mix knob is turned to dry, the gain will still be the same. The difference you are hearing is the result of mono/stereo processing. FreqEcho works best on mono signals as far as volume change is concerned, because it shouldn't change the RMS of the signal until it's filtered in the feedback loop.

I understand. When you have time, perhaps?

The 0.01 ms is deceptive. This is the minimum delay of the delay line itself. In reality, the phase differencing network used in the algorithm will be adding its own delay, where the amount of delay varies according to frequency. I haven't plotted it, but it is there. Probably on the order of 1 to a few milliseconds.

The nonlinear phase delay is also why the phase shifting sounds so cool when you mix wet and dry signals together.

I changed the lowest LowCut frequency to 20 Hz, and the highest HighCut frequency to 15000 Hz. There isn't much of a point in increasing the HighCut frequency any further, as things fall apart above there anyway, due to various Nyquist issues.

If I ever decide to oversample things, then I will increase the maximum HighCut frequency to 20 KHz. This is another idea "for the future."

I may try and finish up my new parameter warping / mapping code for this plugin, since I am breaking stuff anyway. This will delay the release of the new version, but it will be a much better plugin as a result (i.e. the automation will be better able to get short delays and small shift amounts), and I need to do the work anyway for the next plugin.

A FreqEcho example I recorded earlier today, as part of a CPU measurement test. 8 instances of FreqEcho in series, no input.

I might as well share this little goodie. It not for people sensitive to sharp tones, but it's well balanced, so listen at a reasonable volume. It has it's good moments and it's boring moment.

Hello Sean, I would like to know if you were planning on adding a pan control or something that make the pan change in the FreqEcho ?
Thanks for the amazing plugs...I bought them all!!

What a mysterious sounding audio clip...

I'm not sure what sort of math would be involved for panning the stereo image when FreqEcho is in Stereo mode. The effects generated there are very much based on phase differences between the channels, and mixing the channels together would turn the algorithm into a rather ugly ring modulator/tremolo effect. The signal could be panned in Mono mode, but this would result in an asymmetric stereo image. Plus, I like having a more minimal control set for this plugin.

Hey, I just bought shimmerverb and its not got half as many algorithms as valhallaroom!!. I really love the sound because nothing else does what it does and its given my pads and ambience a whole new depth of sound quality, really oozes the atmosphere from the reverbs of the 80's and 90's.BUT, compared to valhalla room its a bit skimping on Presets and algorithms. :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum:

Is ValhallaShimmer LACKING anything that it needs?

ValhallaRoom has a whole bunch of algorithms in it, because I wasn't satisfied with the original algorithms it shipped with. ValhallaShimmer, in my opinion, had a good set of algorithms straight out of the gate.

Shimmer is simpler than Room, is more focused towards the psychedelic, and it gets the job done. Adding a bunch of algorithms to Shimmer would just be adding a bunch of distractions.

The updates I have been adding to ValhallaFreqEcho have allowed me to get reacquainted with that plugin. I really like the simplicity of FreqEcho, as you can get a LOT of sounds out of that single algorithm and 6 knobs. I feel strongly that a plugin should have just as many parameters and algorithms as it needs, and not be overloaded just for the sake of adding features.
