Memoirs of the Heart Synthetic - a self indulgent ditty with synth pop overtones, lots of cheesy synth solos, strings, a psychedelic middle part which wants to be Shpongle but doesn't quite get there :hihi:, atmospherics (?) and mangled and vocoder-ized drums here and there.

Your feedback is very welcome especially as I've used a new mastering plugin chain and may have overcooked in some areas. What do you say?

This is a track I did for my own pleasure (hence lots of synth solos, lol) and it's not a demo of a sound bank.

An interesting reference. Have you got any links to music I could check out?

@bluedad, thanks. Glad you liked the solos. :)

love the bass in this, what synth did you use ?

Post

@4lb Kitty, I'm happy you did! :D

@aidanpete, you want to see names of synths? eh? eh? :D I told myself when posting this track that I won't reveal what synths were used ...but what the heck: all bass is from Saurus.
However, all bass sounds were treated by The Glue <--love this compressor.

I really like that phat bass and those poly rhythms you got going on hear (spelling intended). Everything sounds so nice and clear. Wish I could get a nice clean mix like this! Nice work! o-@

Not listening on good enough monitors to give detailed mastering feedback but what I can hear sounds great - nice separation between voices that allows you to see into the mix (hard to do with so many synths with rich harmonic content), but decent overall gelled-together sound.

It's been a while since I was involved in any mixing and mastering, but getting into it again a bit, I remember now how much there's no substitution for lots of fiddly work nailing down the small details.

It didn't stand out slotted into a random mp3 playlist, so that's good too! What are you trying out for the mastering then?

Thanks. Glad you spotted the poly-rhythms (or arpeggios beating against other sounds, ha!).

That's good to hear as the mix is very busy in places (which is how I like it) but it's important to still keep some clarity. Thanks for the feedback. :-)

Nothing major actually. What it is, for the first time I have used The Glue on the master bus in a finished track. In the past I would use Voxengo's Soniformer and Elephant to control the dynamics, but this time The Glue went in first.

I find the combination of The Glue and Soniformer to be a good one.

Anyway, the actual plugin chain is:
1. The Glue
2. Voxengo Elephant (used here instead of The Glue's 'Peak Clip In' and it's only set to prevent clipping).
3. Voxengo HarmoniEQ (a touch of mid boost and 3dB high boost)
4. Voxengo Soniformer (to tame the bass, tweak the mids and open the highs).
5. Elephant (with only 1dB level boost).

Thanks for taking the time to give feedback. :-)

Lovely synth sounds on here. This has a nice '80s vibe to it. Lots of JMJ-esque melodies and chords, and a few little DM hints too. Mixing/mastering sounds nice here. A very enjoyable track.

Good work :)

Thanks seismic1. Your JMJ and DM references are spot on. These guys (as well as a few other artists) are always on my mind when I make electronic tracks .

Thanks Rob. Glad you liked it especially as it does not follow any of the current music genres. :-)

Yes mate.. that's what i like about this, it doesn't follow any particular genre it's just one of those arrangements with amazing sounds that just hits you. Im into that type of sound believe it or not even though i mostly make EDM tracks etc i think this is harder to produce by a mile and again i can say that i'd listen to this stuff all day no problem at all. The production quality and placement of sounds plus the synths and style alone make this a joy to listen.

I like your style mate.. will you being doing more of the same in future?
Would be nice to hear a whole cd of this material.

Best

Rob
