Would two Launchpads be overkill?

I'm going to be using Live a lot now and I'm considering getting a Launchpad. I've watched a ton of videos and see that most people just use one. However I've also noticed those who focus heavily on live playing/tweaking/recording (as opposed to just launching clips and using the mixer) seem to be doing quite a lot of jumping between modes/settings.

To those of you that regularly work with a Launchpad, does one seem like plenty, or do you often wish you could have twice the number of buttons already in front of you?

Wouldn't the amount of time it takes to switch scenes be the same as to move your hand to another device?

Also, can Ableton even recognize two different launchpads, and give them two separate views of the clip view? Dunno

Quite possibly. However I was also thinking of situations where you might want to do two things at once, such as jam with clip triggering with one hand while activating/tweaking effects with the other.

You supposedly can have up to 6 of them running together, and I believe I saw a video earlier today that showed multiple Launchpads showing different clip views and mixer views.

Eh, then by all means I would give it a try. I would only get a single launchpad first though, and if you find yourself being able to use a second then go for it. Don't rush and buy two though.

I have two launchpads - just not enough time to use them. Soon after I got the first I realised two could be better.

One thing I did was create a midi clip to light up pads on one as a visual metronome, counting beats and bars.

I have only had a few minutes with MFX so far but it looks very handy. I have not tried the other stuff yet.

I use a APC40 and a Launch Pad. I've still considered getting a second Launch Pad. I use the APC40 for launching clips/scenes, recording to clips on the fly and controlling macro knobs on instrument/drum/effect racks. I use the Launch Pad with Numerology to program sequencers.

There are so many useful applications for a grid of buttons.

The sensible person inside me (he rarely gets a word in edgewise) recommends that you get one and see if it works for you, then decide if you need a second one.

I spent more time with Live this weekend, and had my two padKontrols assigned to clips, effects, etc. I definitely could see how I'm going to want to have a lot of controls immediately on hand to do simultaneous adjustments/playing, and have devices dedicated to particular tasks, so I went ahead and ordered two Launchpads and the BCR2000. Probably a little excessive, but I think it will be worth it as I suspect it will make it easier for me to treat Live like more of a hands-on instrument.

My desk is soon to be a field of buttons, knobs, drum pads, and XY pads.

As well as the two Launchpads, I have a BCR2000 too and also a Regelwerk. I still haven't got round to setting these up yet but am really looking forward to getting it all set up. Will be after I move house in the next couple of months though.

I'd certainly recommend checking out LPC though.
