Soooooo....

Summer NAMM will be over in a couple of hours. And so far, no news in the plugin realm. At least nothing covered on KVR.

I'm a bit dissapointed. I expected Steinberg to be the axe in the woods again saying "folks, 1st of September - Cubase 7! Or Apple being "Logic Ultra X - out like yesterday" and the likes.

But... there seems to be nothing? Not even Native Instruments? Or is it all "hardware only - software users get out" again so it doesn't belong here? There weren't even any news from NAMM Russia.

Are music fairs for hipsters now? You know, so yesterday that you don't need to attend anymore, cause everything's on Twitter?

Seriously... what's up?

Summer NAMM is generally considered a guitar show. However, I don't think I remember seeing it ever this bare. Sonicstate put up a few guitar-related things but nothing tech at all.

I don't know why they have it anymore. Used to be one place, then they supposedly had two rotating sites, then they didn't like that, then they went back to nashville.......who cares

Still, some people get paid for it, but the "who cares" part still applies. Even the real namm is lame. Everything is "iapp" now and nothing new or groudbreaking every really happens.......when it does, it's usually an online thing.

For a few years there was a lot of end-user oriented coverage of all the big M.I. trade shows. Not so much any more. It just doesn't make sense for most companies announce products that way. It's really expensive, and it requires a lot of coordination to keep product development cycles in sync with the trade shows. Also, when you launch a product at a NAMM, you have to compete with everyone else's announcements.

NAMM, AES, Messe, etc. are still important for retailers, distributors, engineers/product developers and manufacturers. You'd probably see more coverage of summer NAMM in Music Trades than Sonic State or Harmony Central.

I think these expos will continue to be snooze-fests for the most part.

But I don't get it....

I mean, 2 years ago, Summer NAMM was the release pool or all kinds of sh*t (and by that I mean tools). From sample packs, to plugins, to hosts. Now you barely read anything on either site.

Heck I still remember KVR going haywire with NAMM and Musikmesse coverages. Now there is barely anything going on. Though there were at least "some" movement at Musikmesse 2012.

But I expected certain firms to show off - Steinberg, Apple, Magix, Native Instruments (especially since they turned their back on Musikmesse and the rumored drop of Maschine).

Is it really down to web news now?
I miss hanging out at booths and talk shop, touch faders, ask questions and take listening tests.

Then again, next fair that's coming up is the SAE Alumni Convention over here in Germany. And certain firms will attend. But this is by no means a fair like Musikmesse and NAMM.

Damn - that used to be huge!

Isn't all these exhibitions stuff pre-internet elephants that just try to survive - bringing nothing, really?

I have half my career pre internet and half after - and I feel no need to either visit or participate to be up to date or reach out since internet came about.

I also had my career half/half, and I can say that one thing is read about it, or watch some videos, other ything is touching and try the real thing. Of course, for software, these shows don't have a great meaning (if any at all), but for hardware is a completely different thing.

It's not just the software alone. I personally would like to get in touch with the developers, shake hands, ask questions from person to person.

Something that get's kind of drowned in the internet era.

Then again, that's me. Maybe i'm just too oldschool.

Quite right. I'm with you on this. So sad that the economy doesn't allow this anymore.

That's exactly the problem: money. There's little benefit to it for developers these days, so it's purely a goodwill thing for developers and their existing customers that might care to try new stuff from a company they already have bought from.

Then there's money again: I'd love to go to these things, but I'm poor and they don't happen near me. It's hard enough to get hands on demos of hardware where I live because the music stores near me don't stock much more than guitars. My area sucks for music. And art. And everything else. What's worse is that it thinks it's up-and-coming (for decades now).
