It's a relatively simple sound, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to get the same stereo effect that's he's got going on. I've gotten close to the timbre and attack (using FM8), but I can't get the same and stereo motion and width that's going here:

Any thoughts? I've played a bit with some stereo widening effects, and a chorus plugin or two, but haven't quite gotten there.

The actual bass doesn't sound all that wide at all to my ears. It sounds to me like a filtered saw bass, maybe even layered with a filtered pad. Take a saw bass, low-pass it, maybe add a little chorus to widen it a tad, then take pad made from detuned saw waves, add some unison and/or a little bit of chorus to really widen it, and filter it down with a low pass. Adding the pad would give a greater sense of width, as you could widen it much more than you could the bass (doing so to the bass would make a mess).

I didn't listen to the example, but one way to get wide bass is to use haas delay (delay the right or left channel). I have heard that infected mushroom uses this technique. It gives kind of a "out of speaker" sound.

However it's also really mono destructive as it's basically a static flanger when monoed. So you have to get the time right. The bass frequencies should be left mono.

Stereo widening is usually bad idea because you don't know what those plug-ins do.

I actually have a little Haas-effect instrument rack that I created in Live, but I hadn't thought to use it on this bass (normally I use it to push vocals or leads out a bit wider). I'll give it a shot!
