h2ogun99 (or shall I just call you water pistol?): just checked out your stuff. very nice. cool sound that is very radio friendly but has cool experimental touches all over it. nice work. I used to live in OB a long time ago and I remember there was no music scene to speak of at the time (some bad punk rock bands). I remember liking Black Hear Procession and Drive Like Jehu. What label did you sign to? Paul from Manimal (awesome indie synthpop label) is from San Diego too.

One of my favorite features of Reaper is the JesusSonic (JS) scripting language. You can make midi effects and audio effects with it in only a few lines of code. I've written tons of small one-off effects for a particular need, things in other DAWs that would require me to make VSTs or find tools like piz Midi's effects.gabebrunogarza1021 wrote:I thought the same thing, until I had an idea and finally got it working using Enviroment Macros I created.jancivil wrote:But if you're not using it you won't exactly miss it.
I'm actually in the process of it's equivlent as a AU Instrument (talking about my YouTube video)
Like anything else, Macro is faster but AU Instrument (Objective-C code) makes it more flexible.
It's about as difficult as JavaScript and if you're any kind of programmer you should be able to pick it up in a few days.
JS + routing are the #1 and #2 reasons I use Reaper over all other DAWs.

Pardon me for repeating the same questions but I am also curious to know what exactly is lacking in MIDI department.h2ogun99 wrote:Can you explain some of what you're missing in the MIDI department?DuX wrote: I do find it lacking some features, mostly MIDI,

Ahh yes, watergun... haha. That's an old "handle" from when I was an irrigation contractor.michael2 wrote:h2ogun99 (or shall I just call you water pistol?): just checked out your stuff. very nice. cool sound that is very radio friendly but has cool experimental touches all over it. nice work. Thanks for the listen! Means a lot. The label is called Kaono and is not big enough to flaunt. It is run by a music lover/businessman that was blessed in the $ department. More of a hobby for him. We get to record in a cool - built in the 80's - studio here called Big FIsh. So, for me, that is payment enough. I have no expectations with this venture, just will enjoy whatever ride we get out of it.
The music scene here is getting better. As far as playing live, we have found some fun, and not so fun little clubs. I've lived here for 5-ish years. The rest of my days were in Alabama. I will have to say that the music scene in B'ham in 1990 was impressive (Fugazi, Meat Beat Manifesto, REM, etc.) not so much these days... haha. I remember going to New Orleans with my girlfriend March of '90, and she wanted me to meet a friend of hers while there. We meet up in a little (near empty) bar with a few pinball machines pinging in the back. Her friend sits down with us and she says, "This is Trent, Trent Reznor." Trent had his new CD on the jukebox, as he knew the owner. While there, one of his songs came on and an older couple was dancing to it. He said to me, "Well, I've made it now." Little did he know... haha. Just before The XX hit big they played in a small club in downtown San Diego opening for a British band called Friendly Fires. I think it was only months before they took off. There's always hidden gems within little clubs. These days it's hard to get out and pretend I'm 21 again.

I can't speak for everyone, but the piano roll editing isn't very smooth. It's clunkier than other DAWs. Records just fine but if you go into the editor to adjust a note a bit, it can be inefficient to get it just how you want it.satYatunes wrote:Pardon me for repeating the same questions but I am also curious to know what exactly is lacking in MIDI department.h2ogun99 wrote:Can you explain some of what you're missing in the MIDI department?DuX wrote: I do find it lacking some features, mostly MIDI,

Furthermore, I get the occasional bug with it. Sometimes a note will 'hang' for a bit; this seems to happen more in Reaper than in any other program. It doesn't happen too often though.

What's the problem? I never had problems with the piano roll editor in REAPER; I use my mouse together with some keyboard shortcuts. It's much easier than in MuLab, for example. Maybe you have something adjusted incorrectly?JohnDaniel wrote:I can't speak for everyone, but the piano roll editing isn't very smooth. It's clunkier than other DAWs. Possibly - it seems to automatically quantize, sort of 'jerk' from one grid position to next. Strangely, holding [alt] down doesn't work half the time. Settings are possibly off, I haven't messed with it as much as possible. If you have a suggestion I'd love to hear it!

Yeah that's the snap-to-grid function. You can adjust nearly everything in the Preferences. You even could switch the snap-to-grid function completely off.JohnDaniel wrote:Possibly - it seems to automatically quantize, sort of 'jerk' from one grid position to next. For fine-adjusting I use my mouse and nudge the note around while I'm holding down <SHIFT>...
BTW, I forgot something that I love about REAPER: It has a great >400 pages manual!

I don't know how logic is, but in weaper you must either glue all the midi parts together to edit them all, do every clip one at a time, or use the groove tool (which isn't super stable)

Sorry hibidy, can you elaborate on that? When you say edit them all, what kind of editing are you referring to?hibidy wrote:I don't know how logic is, but in weaper you must either glue all the midi parts together to edit them all, do every clip one at a time, or use the groove tool (which isn't super stable)

You CANNOT select more than one midi clip and edit the Q or H. I'll bitch about it till they implementliquidsound wrote:Sorry hibidy, can you elaborate on that? Ooops, too late...hibidy wrote:You CANNOT select more than one midi clip and edit the Q or H. I'll bitch about it till they implementliquidsound wrote:Sorry hibidy, can you elaborate on that? Because you CAN edit more than one MIDI clip - simply select them and choose "Item properties".
If you want to change the notes, you can make from one clip many instances of "ghost copies". Then when you change the notes from one clip, the others will be changed, too.
