My machine is shipping to me very soon, it has a 128gb ssd and a 500gb data drive. Where shoild I install my vsts and data ie. ATrilian sample library and Kontakt libraries? I will primarily be using S1v2 in 64 bit mode and using jbridge for some plugins. Thanks I advance.[/quote]

I'd stick the plugins and smaller libraries on the SSD, and the Kontakt libraries on the larger drive.

Also: If there's any possibility your motherboard supports Intel Smart Response, dedicate some of the SSD to that and it can cache your most-recently-used files on the HD onto the SSD. Say for the case where you're working on one project, loading the same Kontakt samples repeatedly, then you effectively get the SSD speed on the second and subsequent hits...

I have no experience with Smart Response, I guess ill have to look into that. Is it an os level setting or something in bios?

Definitely put them in a separate directory on your data drive. Get another one, if you can, too.

I have my operating system, programs, and music files all on separate drives.

Keep in mind, also, that depending on how much you use your My Documents, My Music, and My Pictures folders, you might fill up that 128GB SSD before you know it.

If this is a DAW only, then you don't have much to worry about.

Both. You make sure its on in the BIOS (on my system, you set the SATA ports to RAID mode), and that dedicates part of the SSD space for use. Then you use an Intel tool to switch it on/off and map which drive you're cacheing.

I hate it when i read somebody's post and think his sig is part of the post.
Then halfway through some dumb gibberish that doesn't make sense i realize i'm reading a signature.

A 128GB SSD for Win7, audio apps and plugins is not enough space to work comfortably.
Do yourself a favor, buy another 128GB SSd and use that one for the audio apps and plugins.

Well sorry you got confused.

Yeah I'll be looking to get another SSD in the future, though I will probably live with that 500GB drive for the time being.

I have the machine, am installing the plugins and libraries to the data drive, and am wondering what the basic thinks I need to do to optimize the pc for daw use are. I am no pro and probably will be happy with just the defaults but ifvthere are any easy tweaks I'd like to know. Diva can finally run happily in Divine mode, so that is a big hurdle already leaped right there. Thanks again!

One thing I've learned with Win7 is it's best to let it install libraries where it wants to. Mine did it in Documents, but it's not like the old documents folder. Another is right click everything and click Run As Administrator, or turn that thing off. Also, Omnisphere had a real problem with it's data folder not having read/write permissions. Fixed with the File Properties tab. Kontakt didn't have this issue. Good luck braj.

Yeah this is my first forray into Win 7, I have a 120 gb ssd as my main drive so my steam folder is on my secondary. Hopefully all goes well because it took literally all night with me waking every couple hours to switch disks. I am on disk 4 only! So still a while to go. Fingers still crossed

I had a similar issue (320GB SSD and 1TB data drive) and found that the SSD was constantly filled from large sample libraries. Kontakt lets you place the samples anywhere you like. I moved the ones I used less often to the data drive. After the Kontakt install, click on the options button at the top of the window, and then select the database tab. Remove the old path from the list and add the path where you moved the less used libraries.

You can also move the StudioOne instrument path as well. This can save quite a bit of space on your system drive. This under options / locations.

That other thing I recommend is possibly moving some of your "My Folders" in Windows. The ones with the icons on them, i.e. My Documents, My Pictures, Downloads, etc., can be moved to another drive. I created a folder "D:\Users\Dave\" and moved my Music, Download, and Video folders there. If you move your "My Documents" folder you will have to rebuild the NI databases, as they unfortunately install many of their data files there.

Yeah I installed all the Kontakt libraries to the data drive and they were fine, no worries there. The Steam folder is what I have heard has the most issues. I also need to get jbridge at some point here and configure that. I do have to say that Reason's approach in these cases seems sublime. But then again, how often do I get a new machine?

braj,just right click the STEAM folder and go in Security and check ALL the Permissions boxes. Even if you get error messages, mine would still play fine in FL. Clicking permissions will do away with those annoying pop up messages.

Yeah luckily it went smoothly and I had no issues

It is a joy to play any Trilian patch in its full glory without worrying about RAM
