Ok it's been a while but here's a new thang:

It's the first track I've made using my new(ish) computer so maybe I went a bit power-mad with the track count/amount of fx...which of course made it a swine to mix

Hope you like my new direction

Great track, Mike. Nice use of samples on here. The track creates a thick, dark atmosphere, and that middle section reminds me of ProjeKct 3 and 4 from about 1998, although a little less frantic. I like the different sections of this track and the way they are sequenced. This is put together very well.

Thanks for listening Tim, and the comments. Your comments are always so well-considered and there's usually a thought-provoking musical reference point too. ProjeKct3 and 4 eh? Well I would never have knowingly tried to emulate that (technique-wise, I am only an egg

), but having been a devotee of the Fripp in everything he's done is bound to have some effect on my musical outpourings

Yes, lots of parts. Interesting samples, angry or sad ? Anticipation builds over that first section, with a restraint in the mid section. The section at 4 min is beautiful, and I like the effects there, and great the way it comes back. Cool stuff.

Thanks for listening fatc, and commenting. I rarely work with samples, but some kind of vocal is de rigeur in this genre. I came across both vocal samples on Freesound.org which is a great source if you're looking for something a bit 'outside-the-box'. You might have to dig around a bit, but I was lucky - when I found the '...raven is angry...' sample it fired my imagination and gave the whole track direction.

Most of the credit for the next-to-last section has to go to the other vocal sample - again courtesy of Freesound, this is indeed a beautiful acapella ('leq' singing, a Greelandic language similar to Canadian inuit languages). All I added to this section was some (tasteful

) delay and a layer of floaty guitar which I pinched from another of my works-in-progress.

Thanks for the listen and the kind words Matt. Yes, those samples were quite a find. In my case, they turned a half-formed collection of sounds into a fully-developed piece of music. Should've called the track 'Serendipity' but I think that's been done

I like the intro-sets a mood right off the bat I get th feeling I'm going to like this. And now I hear an interestingly modern rhythm with African influences. And the arps kick in to define the track as EDM? And the filtered bass gives the track attitude!

I guess the downside of finding something so unusual is it's difficult to repeat the trick without sounding lazy

This is true, and I always love listening, but I don't do it when I'm working on something because I tend to get easily influenced and that can really derail a project. Done now, though.

For instance, I find Burial's music really interesting but Skrillex's music totally banal - as David Bowie once said "it's confusing these days..."

Yeah Mike, you, I and ten million others have been bitten by the 'wobble' bug for sure. You know? Perhaps the biggest problem with 'dubstep' is the stigma that's been attached to it. Perhaps it's silly to put it in the 'genre' box? Regarding Skrillex-I totally disagree. I find him quite fascinating and he is brilliant at what he does.

Art is impossible to define isn't it? Fashion, architecture, literature and on and on are all subjective in one's tastes. You know Mike? Some like to paint their walls bright orange while others will find it loud and obnoxious. They may prefer a nice soothing light green?

Annnnyyyywaaaayyyy...I know this has been talked to death...bla bla bla....
