How can I make this turkey taste like beef? Buy some beef instead...
lol true
i'd say that none of the NI synths should be your first choice for "analog sound"
(except maybe some reaktor ens i might've missed)

Every time N.I. has a $99 sale on Massive I eagerly download the demo, give it a good workout and then decide not to to buy it.......There is something about Massive that leaves me unimpressed every time. Perhaps it's because I won so many other synths.........

I've gotten analog-esque sounds out of Massive, like basses that sound somewhat Moogy, but they tend to have a more classic VA flavor (like they might have been done with a Virus) than a real analog vibe. Like others have said, Massive is more the synth I go to when I want really modern, glossy sounds...the kind of thing you might turn to a Virus or Microwave XT for if you were using hardware. Sometimes it takes a bit of diligence to find the right choice of wavetables (and indexes within those tables) and other settings to avoid regions that can sound harsh, but there are a lot of lush, non-harsh sounds lurking in there if you don't want it to bite your head off.

same for me, until i compressed it ( and not 1db of compression but a heavy dose that i m not used with my other synths) to make it cut in the mix ,to make it slaming.Teksonik wrote:Every time N.I. has a $99 sale on Massive I eagerly download the demo, give it a good workout and then decide not to to buy it.......There is something about Massive that leaves me unimpressed every time. i m not familar with it yet but it seems it need more processing than my usual synths but the sound can be really good in the end

The easy solution is to use another plug-in for analog-style sounds and use Massive for what it's good at.mikedw wrote:Any tricks to get Massive sound less digital?
I think choice of compressor effects, or something similar.

I've actually recently worked on a soundset creating analogue-esque presets.
Cyforce's suggestion of sending some slowly evolving LFOs to the oitch of the oscillators is a good one. Also, keep the cutoff low, massive can create some very nice and thick analogue-style basses.
The main thing is to keep things simple. Don't throw too many effects or complex LFOs at the sound. And save an oscillator for a really low sound, even if you're making leads - it's good for creating that depth.
Finally, a very quick "this synth is all over the place!" technique. Choose the 'Chorus Ensemble' effect and turn the first dial all the way to the right. Instant tuning misbehaviour!

I think that massive has enough in it to sound analog. I have used quite a few analog synths over the years, and you might be surprised to find that they don't all sound 'analog'. Buchlas for example sound very precise and forward, and hardly like what one might expect if they are used to Rolands or Moogs. There is a new tutorial at macprovideo.com that is called Massive: Dubstep Sound Design.http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/nat ... und-design (http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/native-instruments306-massive-dubstep-sound-design)
It goes through the massive instrument in detail, exploring all the components and how to use them effectively. It might help you figure something out. There is also an excellent series there called Mix Digital, Sound Analog.

It is a walkthrough of the Universal Audio Plugins. They are all modelled after real vintage compressors, Tape machines, reverbs etc. They will be able to make massive sound like it is being run through analog gear. I absolutely loved this tutorial, and learned a load from it. I am big tube junkie, but it is very expensive to get the good analog gear, so I use the UA plugins religiously to achieve the sound quality of the old gear (although my tl audio tube compressor EQ still gets used on the input signal of any vocal).

don't forget this "no-brainer" (heh heh):
use the random mod source in tiny amounts on a lot of parameters.
