I'm curious what you think. Especially the actual users. I don't think that I will fall for it but from videos on internet and reviews I can't establish what it is.
From one side clever technical ideas crammed into a small package. From the other hand I can't see it as a replacement of an average lappy or an ipad with a right software.
Obviously I may missing a lot as I didn't have an opportunity to play with it.

I own one and its a clever device indeed.

I like to call it a rich man's toy. I got quite a deal on one for making the OP-1 Drumkit utility: http://www.xferrecords.com/freeware

I do value it a lot, though it isn't fair to compare to laptops.

I have gotten very pleasing musical results from it which I would have never come up with otherwise, so that alone gives it value to me. I find it great for starting song ideas and then mounting the device over USB and copying the audio files to host.

For me the biggest strengths are

- the portability
- radio tuner/sampling
- various synthesizer algos (which aren't artifact-free, but still great things happen).

Cheers bitcrusher for your input. Well, it looks pretty much like it. I'm sure it is useful but not sure if it's worth 800EUR Wink

They should have made it a premium iPad app and not bankrupt themselves. Most of the time I see them on the internet they are for sale. It really should have been €/$199.

yeah with 200Eur tag it wouldn't be a major concern for many to buy it just for sake of trying. when i'm watching the vids i have mixed fellings. either the vids are crap and can't show the potential of the unit (which it seems to be there) or the hype around the OP can't match the reality. anyway in some way i'm willing to belive that it's a unique and capable electronic gizmo.

There are some useful comments about the OP-1 about 4 posts in to this thread on the DSI Tempest forum:

I really like mine. Got one soon after they where released. It is a great sketchbook, and I love to take it on hikes, and just sit somewhere remote and work on a little song idea. I did not get many finished songs out of it. Mainly loops and soundscapes, that found their way into my music at some later stage in a studio scenario. It is a great toy. If it is worth the Euro 800 is hugely subjective I guess. If I lost mine I would probably buy another one.

I haven't had my chance (unfortunately) to test one. It seems like one of thoose things you should have if you're on the move. However from the demos i've heard, it doesn't sound like something you would buy for a greater studio setup Smile

A toy? You're joking =)

You can make the whole tracks on it.
Someone don't like its sound, but it's perfect for glitch hop, for example.

And imho interface and control is good.

And btw - if hate ipads and computers - it's very reasonable instrument (and lol there is no similar devices that costs less.. i mean different synth + drum/sampler + 4-track-tape etc)

anyway, it's not universal, of course. But many people say that it's limits push them to more creative - though it's obvious but wanna mentioned.

And some - are really disappointed that filter is just an effect , heh
