As all genres are, a really abused term. Not picking on Vurt but I remember Swervedriver interviews where they left doubt as to how they felt about the term... Blur and Dinosaur Jr got lumped in too by certain lazy journos.

And what was the term the weeklies used for all the 2nd gen bands, the scene that celebrated itself?

well, it wasnt really a genre as such, it was a dance style
it was indeed just an extension of goth really, just with a bit more distortion in parts and less worrying about melodies.
i think blur and dinosaur jr got lumped in because of the rollercoaster tour, i always consider dinosaur jr to be more country than anything, but then im not a journalist. if i was, things would be different i tells ya!

and if you cant pull an emo shoegazing goth chick? what the hell? such low self esteem they give it away!

Being a huge fan of Joy Division (and all of the band off-shoots), I have somewhat of a idea on what emo is (the question is whether I can explain it well ). Joy Division was actually considered "post-punk" and a predecessor to what became known as Goth (Think Bauhaus). Emo, while a newer style, and had a big uprising in the 90s. It is based a lot on minor chords, drones, and very moody (thus the term emo--short for emotion). The polar opposite of emo being bubblegum pop. Dead Can Dance started out Goth, but quickly turned to world music (although I just recently learned that they are still putting out songs and just this year put out a controversial song called Amnesia). Since I haven't kept up with Dead Can Dance for several years, it is possible that they have gone goth or emo, but while they contain elements of that genre, I wouldn't quite place them within it. Nowadays, it is easy to find bands that are similar to the emo vein in the "Dark Wave" category (think New Wave with a mood). At any rate, I hope this helps a little bit, rather than than confusing you more. I'm sure someone could do a better job at explaining it. In my mind, I just think: Opposite of bubblegum pop.
