I listen to other people's music mostly when I'm writing a rough draft of a song. Otherwise I listen to a few songs here and there. When I was a teenager, I'd go through two or three albums a day. Now it's one album a week, if even that. Maybe it's part of getting older? *scratches head*

This is it. Also you should make yourself listen to stuff you normally wouldn't like to, just for the sake of broadening your perception. Listen to some opera once in a while, or some avantgarde jazz, or if you do listen to those at everyday basis, go listen to some dubstep.

I listen constantly (mostly at work in headphones) and go through phases where I listen to a particular style for a few days before burning out on it. I think it's normal to take a break every now and then, though.

Most of us probably need to have a "media fast" a lot more often, imo. I think I had more consistent artistic drives when I didn't have as many ways to amuse myself. But when you work a life-draining corporate job, sometimes the only cure for that is a comfortable chair, wine, and a great TV series like The Walking Dead. Incidental music is often quite nifty!

Interesting to think about.

This thread made me realize that I dont really listen to or enjoy music that is very much like the music I make...
I listen to a TON of music, but not my own, or anything similar.
I dont know what that means!

Wait, is this about not listening to music in general, or listening to ones own creations? I think these are very different from eachother.

Also you said "..ive been finding it really hard to write music while not listening to it.". Does this mean listening to your own work when you're near completion, or are you literally listening to other music while you create soundscapes?

I'm always listening to music, of all types. I will say though that the music that I create, and the music that I listen to are often very different. I'm much more likely to enjoy creating Electronic Music (ambient, downtempo, etc.) than I would listening to the same type of music. I listen to Metal, Blues, Rock, Jam Band stuff mostly, but I find myself making completely different stuff in the studio. maybe I'm weird though.

It's rare for me to just sit down and listen to music nowadays. I used to a lot when I was a teenager. When I do listen to music now, it's because:
a) I'm working on some kind of graphic art, or...
b) I'm listening to something for the first time, or...
c) it's really incredible music that dominates my attention span, or...
d) I'm driving.

in general. not listening to ANY other artists. just creating it.

I'm that way too. I go in two week spells then I get really really bored with it and change styles. I don't listen to electronica that much it puts me in a dare I say it trance like state. My playing style is equally erratic though I find myself playing more "roots" (folk rock blues) music as of recent.

when I'm working on something, which should be all of the time, I can't listen to much if anything. music sticks in my ear and it's clutter when I need clarity. When I'm working there is a lot banging around up there.

I'm not real well atm, working is slow going... and I'm listening to some Frank Sinatra and Julie London on one side and deep Indian classical music on the other side. I go for nourishment, rather than junk food.

I've accumulated a lot from listening over the years.

recently at work I got an FM radio, and I listen to quite a bit of music.

The one thing I've noticed is that Modern Country sounds almost exactly the same as the modern pop out currently out there.
