Removing Indexing ie. Windows Search does tend to remove some important functionality, like searching in the control panel.
Most of the usual optimisation tips (see sig) will work.

I make music: progressive-acoustic | electronica/game-soundtrack work | progressive alt-metal

I generally tend to disable all the features in the "Turn Windows features on or off", with the exception of .Net 3 in some systems, because some video editing programs need it.
I also disable scheduled defragmenting, Windows Defender and system restore (you should then have a different system backup in place). And set the updates to "Check, but let me choose..". Oh and disable offline files in the Sync center, in case they're enabled.
That's mostly it off top of my head, but I'll write something more detailed eventually.

@bensw: thanks! sounds like good advice to me
Another factor is that I'm not installing much at the moment, as I'm using the free 90-day developer's evaluation version of Win8 while waiting to buy an academic or OEM/system-builder license. I'll have to reinstall Windows and start over in the next month or so.
I installed Realtek's Win8 driver for their on-board HDA audio chip, and that is working without crackles with Asio4all and FL Studio, even while recording from a USB mic as a second audio device.
You can get past the tablet-y interface (which I like for some things) to the familiar desktop and from there it's a lot like Windows 7.
No complaints so far, but it's probably too early to say, considering how infrequently I actually make music.ouroboros wrote:How do you like music & Win8 so far, havran?

I should add that for people who are already doing well with Windows 7 (or XP), I don't see a compelling reason to make the switch. On the other hand, it's enough like Windows 7 that it probably would not be much of a problem, although of course people should do some research beforehand regarding drivers for their audio devices and dongles, as well as compatibility with their primary music-making software. In some cases people might need to run their software in Windows 7 compatibility mode or as administrator.
(In my case it was a good time to give it a try. I had just rebuilt my PC to play with video editing software and needed to upgrade to a 64-bit OS anyway to take advantage of the extra RAM.)
