Why is there no Mac version of this interesting synth?

As far as I know, the only attempt to port it to MAC was done quite a long time ago (like 2005).aMUSEd wrote:Why is there no Mac version of this interesting synth?
That link is no longer available but a snapshot of it (i think) is discussed here:zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net wrote:Also, there is a MacOSX port available at http://bennyp.no-ip.org/zyn_mac/index.html, thanks to Ben Powers.

Yeah I know about that but it won't run on modern Macs. It seems strange that a Linux app can't be easily ported to another flavour of Unix (which is what OSX is).

hmm I wonder if this could fit the VST...

It's still a GUI based on multiple windows... I wonder how compatible this NTK is to the original FLTK and what dependencies are required...

The issue is that no mac devs have seemed to be interested.
I'd imaging the porting would not be that difficult, but you do need some form of mac developer for that to happen.

Hi fundamental,
Do you know what other dependencies (if any) are required to use NTK?

NTK is a fork of FLTK, so things are very much the same, the largest difference between the two is there are some changes in the FL_BOX types (on the code level).
The only additional dependency that is added with NTK should be cairo.

It certainly *looks* nicer - a lot easier on the eyes, and more "modern-y".jackoo wrote:hmm I wonder if this could fit the VST...
On the UI front, one thing I have longed for is the ability to double click or right click a control and get a dialog to display/set the actual value in some useful units (dB, or mS, or Hz). When I am trying to do something like get the echo time aligned with the beat I feel like I am turning a dirty pot, but I can't pull the panel and squirt pot cleaner in My workaround is to keep the XML level set to zero so I can edit the values I want into the .xiz file directly - just waiting for the day that I inadvertently enter the missile launch code...
The other thing that would be nice would be to make each of the windows just a hair bigger - it is painfully obvious that a fair bit of stuff has been added to many of the panels, squeezed in between existing controls. If anyone is actually still using an 800x600 display, they need a gentle nudge into the 21st century IMHO

On this note, I just saw an announcement from Intel this morning that they are sampling their new Xeon "Phi" chip - 60 cores (yes sixty ) with a vector processing instruction set that will make FFT/IFFT operations run blindingly fast. Of course it is aimed at the high-end server market, but as we all know, today's high-end server chips typically land in high-end desktops within about 3 years.ishkabbible wrote:Indeed, but Moore's law has hit a wall in semiconductor physics, which I believe means that compute power increases will come from more cores / chip rather than more processing power / core at least for the next few years. ANy software that can not scale to more cores will be left behind - I would prefer that Zyn not suffer that fate.DuX wrote:And tomorrow's CPUs will be just more powerful.

@aMUSEd
sorry everyone for spamming this, but I'm replying to all those that ask for a Mac version.
I managed to install and run fine, info here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=398726

Hello Paul
May I suggest you to update this page ?
http://www.kvraudio.com/product/zynadds ... _paulnasca
It has remained at the version 2.1.1 which is today... 10 years old!!!
So all the beginners who don't know yet this VST and who visit the product page... ALL of them may think that the product hasn't evolved at all, or even worse... has totally ceased to live. We who know the product, we know that it is false, of course, but an amazing crowd of beginners miss out on the opportunity to discover this wonderful product, just because they see a version number and a date of update... which is ten years old! (2004 !)
A very quick and simple update of the product version number should be really an excellent booster and a great ease for all the beginners.
And incidentally you should also add this link
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=47
to the "Forum" tab at the top of the same page. I just answered minutes ago to someone who seemed to not know at all the existence of our forum.
Kind regards,
BlackWinny

BlackWinny,
Odds are that PaulN won't see the post as he has not been active with the project for quite a while at this stage.
At the moment he is the only one who can update that information, though perhaps one of us should see about getting that permission updated.

I would personally discourage beginners to stay away from this synth.
Its architecture is complex and its buggy as hell.
Id certainly recommend it to hardened synth heads though

Oh when I said "beginners" I made perhaps a little confusion in the exact meaning of the word, I wanted to say "people who don't know the existence of ZynAddSubFX", not "beginners on VST usage".VariKusBrainZ wrote:I would personally discourage beginners to stay away from this synth.

Pardon my english, not always using the right words... and which also is buggy as hell...
