Yes, their audio demos are horrible !
I wonder what they were thinking ? with all the amazing competing products, they are thinking this is going to sell this product ?
Maybe they need to look around and see how demos are made, or they have a lemon-string product.
Oh well... I would be interested in getting some feedback as well regarding their solo-strings, and other orchestral libraries. I wonder who would buy them based on these (horrible sounding) demos

this was what, four years ago? it's not supposed to be bread and butter AT ALL, it's supposed to be avant-garde extended techniques.
I have seen people mention them at VSL forums. they were not really too up to date as far as the handling for when it came out. I looked at it for a moment as it should fill a gigantic gap in samples libraries...
I found this right away, I read this, and I saw it echoed by people that did buy it: "this library is much more evocative than it is expressive — by which I mean that any individual note you play has lots of character, but you'll have to work hard to link those notes together into a truly musical-sounding phrase. This is primarily because, for all its avant-garde content, the multisampling seems rather out of touch with the state of the art."
If you're not looking for 'avant-garde/extended techniques' strings, and particularly if you don't even know what that is, don't worry about it, this is a very niche product that the people that really wanted it were disappointed with.

That kinda rings true for a few of the UVI packs in my opinion. Except Synths Anthology (Ultra Focus) which has actually been surprisingly useful for me.
The demos on the solo instruments page remind me of the David Sylvian album "Manafon"... it's chamber music yes? Avant Garde?... I used to shudder at that label. "Let's put all the weird shit into this box here..."

Avant Garde sounding strings = Crappy Sounding Strings
PASS on this crap.
I will surely not waste my money on this.
Hopefully UVI will get the message that these are a failure product, and develop some great sounding, realistic strings, both solo and section.

The IRCAM Institute is well-known for their expertise on contemporary music.
The purpose of the demos featuring IRCAM Solo Instruments is to focus on what people are looking for in these specific instruments. From contemporary classical music fans to sound designers, they are not necessarily looking for another solo string library but something different with unusual playing techniques.
IRCAM Solo is capable of performing traditional sounds really well and it is right that we should keep a demo like this in mind. Thanks for pointing this to us.
BTW: Guillaume Roussel, the guy who did those crappy demos, is now working with Hans Zimmer on projects like Pirates of the Caribbean, and many other films and TV Show

well, there is this and something by ZeroG. there is a gigantic gap in the world of samples libraries, not just strings. albeit some of the gestures in WarpIV music brass and winds amounts to extended techniques.
the approach seems a lot like my problem with certain EWQL things, it's not essentially different than working with loops. if you can make something work in isolation, it's useful to that degree. it's a sort of cobbler's approach; I have been able to put together *performances* with WarpIV articulations but my skepticism was too high to purchase this, and it wasn't a matter of me being really so broke then. Maybe I should have, because I'm always running into situations where I lack the gesture for the thing.

The IRCAM name was not there to impress but mostly to give the context of the samplingTheoM wrote: Personally the Ircam name on these doesn't impress me.. I think for example the Flux ircam effects are *terrible* and in a price league that is borderline insane. Maybe this is applicable for these strings as well. 400 is alot of money for anyone for a handful of instruments..
and no one here is really enthusiastic about them so far either.
I'll stick to what UVI does best, electronica.
IRCAM solo instruments are probably not for people looking for bread and butter orchestral sounds but they do sound great IMHO
