What are the limitations of running NI Razor without full Reaktor?

I'm thinking about buying Razor (seems that there is not enough wub-wub-wub-weeeee in my life) but I read somewhere on Gearslutz that full Reaktor is needed to fully enjoy it, which I don't have and don't want to buy for the sake of Razor only. From what I get when reading the comparison on NI site, I won't be able to save may patches inside the plugin, but saving the settings within the DAW will still be possible. So it seems that the only limitation would be that I could not share patches with users running other DAWs. Other thing is that I won't be able to reverse engineer the enseble, which I don't need at all. Are there something else?

And do I really need Razor if I have Harmor?

Post

You can save your patches as .rkpresets with Reaktor Player IIRC, which is a different format from Reaktor's internal snapshot file (.ssf).

Razor is quite a different beast from Harmor.

Post

You will have limited Polyphony compared to the full Reaktor. You can save patches as normal and you can share the patches with other users (I've done this).

I haven't used Harmor yet, but Razor is a brilliant synth.

Limited polyphony? First time I heard that one.

Yes it's in the manual. I think because it's CPU heavy, they limited the polyphony (I think it's 6) but with the full Reaktor you can change that.

I am not talking about the polyphony controls in Razor itself.

Thanks.

6 voice polyphony must be ok in most cases.

Yes perfectly fine in most cases. Although note stealing will effect echo and reverb tails because these are actually generated/synthesized by Razor

I normally use external reverbs/delays. Or is there something special about those built in Razor?

Post

Yes - they're special because they are generated for each note individually, as part of the oscillator itself. Totally different sound to them.

Post

Very special!

I got the Reaktor player version. I advise taking the plunge and getting Razor.

It used to be possible to change polyphony from the top of the panel view without opening it up for editing, pity NI decided to hide that control away (for no good reason afaik)

Hm!, didn't know about a VST/Standalone version of Razor, the first time i'm reading this.

I have the reaktor player version. Is this VST version a different download or purchase version or it comes with the Reaktor player version too?

Have a nice day :)

It's still possible to show that panel, but only in full version of Reaktor (gotta select the ensemble in edit mode, go to its properties panel, View tab, and tick "Show Header"). But yeah, the voices count seems to be greyed out and unable to be changed. Bummer.
