Sorry, 1 more question: How long after the competition ends do the songs need to stay on Soundcloud?

Post

Since you're sharing on the OSC group, it would need to stay up until both conditions are true (generally):
1) V'ger has downloaded the song (done probably on 1st or before that)
2) 15th of the month, when the voting has ended (unless said otherwise)

Can someone please advise on how to put some energy into a kick sound. I have tried all fx types eq, saturation, compressor and what not but still can't get that energy. The f*** thing goes 18.5db and up on the meter and Reaper mutes the track every time. On top of that I have cough, cold and headache. This weekend I will try some more. If nothing +ve then the track will go to the trash bin. Some excellent tracks already, can't match those :-(. The whole purpose was to learn Podolski little better cause I am gonna keep it. Love the arps in factory presets though.

Congratulations bjporter.

I think we'd have to know how you're attempting to create the kick. I used the LFO with saw down to modulate the tune and filter. That said, I found programming percussion with Podolski a little tricky.

Man I'll do a video on this once I get a chance.

Warning: haven't tried Podolski really... so not sure if this is applicable

Some tips here:
1. Don't try and stretch a single kick patch and hope for the massive uber sounds. Layering will allow much more precision and power.

STEP 1

Layering:
Layer 1: The low thumpy bumpy, and rumpy big bottom end.
You want this layer to start around 120-250 hz and sweep down fast to about 30 to 60hz depending on how your bass works, or what genre/ type of song you're making. I like the sweet spot of 150 to 55hz. Throw a low pass filter on layer 1, to keep it from messing with your other layers.

Layer 2: The punchy crunchy snare.
I like a nice smack at around 190-200hz for the snare. Make it a little punchy there by getting it to start a little above, and descend down to 190-200hz. So maybe 240 to 200hz. EQ out anything below 170, but leave the upper parts. Flux bittersweet may bring out more snap.

Layer 3: The snappy whippy 'top of snare'.
Use something that sounds like noise (some people here seemed to have found methods so far). And shape it such that it snaps hard. I can't really describe it here... you need to experiment. This is theoretically the top of the snare. Make sure to EQ out any junk below it, but keep the highs.

Note: make sure that the Amplitude envelope Decays of each layer are appropriate. The Layer 3 should be shorter. Layer 1 should have some attack... it should almost look a bit like a bell curve. Layer 2 is low attack, and ends before layer 1.

STEP 2
Route / send all three layers into a group / bus.
This is where a nice tight compression works. Try Variety of Sound density. Also you can add some FLUX Bittersweet to give it a little nicer snap or even take away overall snap of the sound... if it's too much. Now add some You Wa Shock maximizer here... it just blasts out the overall sound. I love this plug. Watch out it can bring out some artifacts if blasted too high.
You could probably add more power by boosting at around 200-300. Add more presence (or help cut in a mix) by boosting around 4-7khz.

Step 3
Shake, Swallow, now swoosh. Follow up with some fresh mountain goat cheese, and ripe ataulfo mangos.

I'll update this ... probably missing a lot here.

Layering is indeed the answer (or one answer). You can get boom with Podolski. You can get slap. But not at the same time. I've mapped Env1 to Decay, Filter, Tune and WaveWarp so it gets an attack with more harmonics through to triangle wave at the end. For the boomy kick, experiment with AutoFM and Drive for something more hardcore..

I adapted one of Rsmus7's kicks for the slap and cooked up a boomy one here:

http://gamma-ut.com/patches/Kick-2%20SM-G.h2p

The combination shouldn't need too much EQ and compression. YMMV.

I messed around with one factory preset. I have brought it down to the sound that I want but the energy level of the kick is very low.

Please do, it will be helpful for so many. I watched a video sometime back where a guy used one kick sample and created three tracks. He EQ'ed all three tracks exactly the way you mentioned. He kept only a certain freq range in each track, basically dividing the freq spectrum into 3 bands / tracks. I will try the steps over the weekend.

That's what I did, messed around with one factory preset. Thanks for sharing your presets and tips.

Finally found the time to write some music this month. Podolski is very nice for arpeggio sequences! Title was inspired by one of the prizes...

Enjoy!

TRACK NOTES:

Created for the KVR One-Synth-Challenge 52: Podolski.

All sounds from U-He's Podolski synth. I adapted some of the preset patches: "floatpad-1 SM" and "UH Long Bass"; all the other sounds I programmed myself.

Produced in Apple Logic Pro 8 using native fx (Compressor, Multipressor, Enveloper, Limiter, Channel EQ, Linear Phase EQ, Stereo Delay, Tape Delay, Exciter) and free fx (Voxengo OldSkoolVerb) only.

Hey SatYatunes and others... I'm uploading a video on youtube of Part 1 of making a podolski kick with links to patches, and a technique I call the 'Slip and Drop method' for making kicks with synths like this.

It'll take an hour or so, I'll reply when its up

Kick tutorial Part 1

How to make a kick using Podolski, Part 1 - the Lower Kick.

**Please remember** to use the Slip & Drop technique... where you make 2 notes overlap and use glide to allow them to simulate Pitch Envelope Modulation.

Awesome video! Really learned from that. Great presentation. The slip & drop technique is brilliant. Can't wait to try it out. Excited for more vids from you!

And btw, being a Philly guy I LOVED the Fresh Prince Jazzy Jeff shoutouts!!!

Thanks bro!
