My current (old) system actually has an AMD Athalon 64x2 CPU on an ASUS m2n-e SLI MB I built back in 2007 and it has worked really well for me. I use a lot of VST's back from Sonar7 upto X1 as well as on Presonus Studio and my system is very stable.....it only lacked the "firepower" that I need which the newer processors provide (as well as needing more RAM than what the 32bit systems offer).
I think if all the components are compatible with each other, and with the newer Bulldozer specs of the AMD, this can provide an excellent value........bang for the buck.
Of course, you should do some research on the specifics of each component to insure your build will last a long time.

Check out this recent thread:

Scott ADK posted some positive info about AMD, so you can basically ignore my posts ;)

Peace,
Andy.

It doesn't look like Firewire is very fashionable anymore, so I'll probably have to get an add-on 1394 board to work with my MOTU 828 mkII. Anything to look out for, or one that you would recommend?
