obviously, it is an 'old' design, there are big variations
in volume on different settings, and 'artifacts'(noise) has
to be dealt with sometimes. nevertheless, a sound source for
some real dirt if you want it.

Really didn't like the Roland JD-800, very flat sound and one trick pony. Though that was just my impression after trying to use one in a studio for a few days. It's probably a great keyboard really.

Which trick is that exactly? You referring to pads? Considering the JD800 (well, the JD-990 has more features) synth engine is "almost" identical (I know the Tones are stereo instead of mono, etc.) to even the Fantom and JV series, they are feature rich, highly programmable and very flexible synths. Yes, they are great for pads. Pair it with a JV80-04 Vintage Card, and you have a ton of good material to work with that sounded phenominal. Although the JD80-04 Strings card was highly overrated and overpriced, IMHO. 7 samples essentially and goes for $200-$300 if not more. Insane. Very bass-y cello samples though, moreso than most. I digress...

Not sure what you mean by flat either? If we're talking the 'natural instrument' patches, sure. Big yawn. But the samples are some of the highest quality, meaning non-compressed 44.1k recordings, compared to almost every hardware sample playback unit on the market (only the Alesis Q-series had higher sample rates at 48k uncompressed as I recall? Hopefully I'm not spreading mis-information.... ) The JD is often preferred to the JV series because of this reason (44.1k uncompressed vs 30k 8 bit compressed.) I've played them back to back many times and JD certainly sounds more airy/glossy on the high end because of the sample rate differences.

I'm just saying, if you ever get the opportunity, I'd suggest checking it out again. Not saying your opinion is wrong, just give it a fair shake.

Then again, I quite dislike the Roland Juno 106 - probably the most over-rated keyboard of all time. And I stand by that. Now that synth was a true one-trick pony and the trick wasn't even very good. Had one in a studio at a mate's and used it for about a year or two. Total waste of space. Everyone seems to love them though. A Casio CZ-101 sounds better and is more versatile.

Agreed. The Roland DCO synths never did it for me either. The 106 was a yawn along with the Alpha Juno.
