Desktops and netbooks are definitely on their way out

Desktops will NEVER be "out". They will always have the most power available. Which is really important in things that we do (DAW, native plugins, etc.)

In terms of sales they are. While they might not disappear completely I think the only way they could survive is if they get more expensive as the current wafter thin profits can't be sustained without the current volume.

They may become a niche product, but there is certainly a decline in sales with no sign of a leveling off that I have seen comment or predictions of.

Part of the poor sales can be explained by the real unemployment rate in
the U.S. as opposed to the fantasy 7.x% quoted in the 'news'.
Once someones benefits expire, they are no longer counted. Think back to all
the months of 350,000 new benefits claims in 2009, 2010, 2011, fast forward
to reality that marginal workers are no longer affordable/employable, only those
pulling their weight, and excelling, keep their job, or get one. The actual
numbers of unemployed, or part-timers, are the ones not buying, reduced
to raw economic survival, then Moms basement, etc.

One part of sales losses are people like me, who dont like the direction of windows, in turn i have no need to upgrade my hardware.

Part of the sales figures can be accounted for by physical space, no? How many phones can you fit in your living area? How many computers? Have you ever, or know someone, who shared a computer with others? How about a cell phone/tablet?

Do you live with others? Do the number of phones/tablets outnumber the people?

Theyre easier to hide as well... "A study by Motorola found that one in ten cell phone subscribers have a second phone that often is kept secret from other family members. These phones may be used to engage in activities including extramarital affairs or clandestine business dealings".

A UN study found... "Out of the world's estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones. Only 4.5 billion people have access to working toilets." - Note, this is a bit wrong, as many people have multiple SIM cards.

Bill Gates started the "Reinvent the Toilet" campaign. Clearly this is Windows 8, and im not buying.

another factor is that people can already produce and absorb audio and video,
run their businesses, and communicate around the world, with old technology,
and forcing an un-wanted new learning curve upon many potential customers,
for few perceived gains in productivity, in a tight economy, is a failure.

While an i7 with 16 gig ram, and giant monitor might be nice, in my case,
only the monitor would enhance my productivity, because the ancient dual-core
2gig system is still so much faster than it's operator
I'd love a giant screen to reflect back that deer-in-the-headlights stare
