Only technicalities. The SPL transient shaper is basically two opposing envelope followers controlling the VCA. When you make a difference to one of them, for instance shortening the attack of the negative one, you get transient reduction because the faster envelope generator (which is doing negative gain) reacts faster, thus squashing the transient. Do the opposite and you get transient enhancement. Same thing with the release stage but this time it reacts on the sustain portion of the sound. It's a rather brilliant design but hard to make "jitter" free (the SPL plugin suffers from less jitter than some of the competition but is worse than the NI version in this regard, at least in my opinion).

Both dynamics processors can achieve similar results, namely increasing dynamic range. Opening up the attack of a compressor with a moderate release will separate the initial transient from the sustain, thus increasing dynamic range.

You can also build/program a compressor to do upwards expansion, that is have a positive gain curve/transfer function meaning that any sound going over the threshold is actually louder by the set ratio. Very useful. With this kind of unit you can actually boost the sustain part by simply opening up the attack so that the initial transient does not gain any volume.

So many ways of achieving similar results. In the end it all comes down to how the thing is wired on the inside (how program dependent it is etc.).

The difference between the 2 opposing envelope generators versus an upwards expander is that you do not need a threshold control at all because it is dealing with differences between the two envelope generators. With the upwards expander you need to specify a threshold of when the gain addition happens. Both have their uses. One is fiddly to set up properly but gives the user more precise control.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I forgot about the threshold level : important difference indeed ^^ But I've read some transients plugins were claiming to be level-independant. Aren't all transients shapers level-independant by their very nature or did I misunderstood something ?

this is exactly why i always scream for the developers to include a limiter behind the actual compressor. that way i'm able to actually leave the transients unaffected by the compressor, using the compressor to even exaggerate the smack, then drive the output of the compressor into a good limiter, which then takes care of the transients/smack in a way more appropiate way... i have actually _never_ found any compressor, that reduces dynamics in an appropiate way (hard and software) - rather the other way around - as i never was satisfied with a compressor if the attack is closed fully to tame the transient, i always leave the attack a fair bit open, to let the transient slip through, so it doesn't get treated in a way i don't want - and then it is actually the opposite - you actually increase the dynamic of the signal. but, and here it comes, you do that in a controlled way. now, after compressing, i raise the level of the compressors out into a limiter, which itself will be treated via release so long, until i hear fit on the transients, keeping the out signal of the limiter at least back at the level it has prior the compressors input, if not slightly higher...
this is how i get my drums or transients chunky, and fully avoid clickyness...

that's because the rencomp has a fixed l1 on its output, as well as the internal envelope follower is somewhat docile...

that's because it's a limiter (again i assume it's a derivate of the l1) followed by a saturator. it's no compressor.

i will have to test thisone (but where to find the time...). i only once had a chance to use a real one and that was ages ago, but i do for sure remember the special character... i mean 20 tubes...:) to me it was more a leveller than a compressor, it never ever catched any fast transients, but the tubes sounded really good, they did a really nice sheen on the hf part, almost like a very good but minimally used tubeexiter... so yeah, i won't be able to tell if it absolutely nails the original (which i doubt, simply because there cannot be even 2 of them sounding the same, these are so complex and fully handmade, there must be tons of minimal differences between the summary of components used to build one), but i'll catch the character if it's there, for sure... heck, i don't even care if it sounds like a real fairchild, as long as it sounds good to my petted ears... :)

no. if you don't drive the limiter threshold, no. but i assume it's because it has lookahead then... not necessarily a lot, but just a few samples would be enough to catch transients...

Note how different they sound! Personally I think the NI/softube version sounds much closer to how I remember it.. the attack that is! I actually prefer the release action of the IK SSL but the attack bothers me a lot. It's not what I'd call "phat" and controlled. It's clicky.

EDIT: the more I play with these the more I think "the truth" might lie somewhere in between! We had a go with Kingston changing some of the internal components in his SSL clone and one of the clear changes was in how the transients were either "precise" or "chunky" in addition to one sounding much more hi-fi and loosing less top end. I don't remember exactly what we were changing.. the VCA's? But there was a definite change in character between the "expensive" components and the original ones. I think we both ended up preferring, or rather "understanding", the cheaper ones due to the chunkyness. It's very possible I remember it all wrong though. It's a couple years ago. :lol:

I didn't agree with you about this before (some years ago) but having become wiser in the past few years (many more mixing experiences under my belt now) I have caught myself adding Pro-L all over the place, precisely for the reason you describe! :D

The two times I've been involved in a project that had access to a Fairchild we didn't use them to crush the mix or drums. One instance it was a Fairchild 660 on a vocal (Anna Ternheim - The Night Visitor...half the songs were mixed at Blackbird and the others are our studio but I don't know which is which to be honest) and the other was a 670 on the mix before hitting a tape machine. In both instances just a touch was used. If you hit them hard, it's more of an effect, and if you just strap them on a do a couple of dB's of compression they are an amazing "glue" Sort of like a Chandler TG Limiter. Again, a lot of people just like to demolish stuff with those two pieces which can be cool but if you just want a little color, barely hit them.

If you want to hear a Fairchild 670 working hard on a mix, a lot of Rick Rubin projects have a Fairchild 670 running into an Ampex ATR-102. And the Ampex is usually in the red when it gets loud!

For what it's worth, there's a board member on the Avid message board that owns an ADL-670 (pretty much an exact clone on a Fairchild, and runs about 20K) and he says the Puigchild followed by an instance of Slate VCC on Neve gets really close to it. That's quiet a claim.

Remember people, a lot of the analog modeled gear I modeled using a reference of 0 dvBU = -18/-20/-22dbFS. So, if you think some of the Waves stuff sounds bad, it might because you are giving it too much input level. I highly recommend the Klanghelm VUMT as a plug-in VU meter. I use 0 = -20 dbFS when I mix, with my digital peaks around - 10 dbFS. The Waves, Softube and UAD stuff sounds a lot bigger this way.

hahaa, that wasn't meant to be a mandatory advice at all! you know, it's only that i constantly get asked the same questions from producers/engineers how i do the things i do just because they like my sound... and, when i was beginning in the 80's, over the years i did the same, i was asking other guys i adore "holes into their stummach" on how they do stuff, just to get that certain sound... even nowadays i constantly try around, different approaches, just to finally find out what works for my ears and what not, and i try to get _why_ that happens, if it does... this way i unmystified a looot of mystified stuff...

Just read this whole thread. It is really great, very high quality scientific based discussion of music tech. - it is what makes KVR so good and at no point has it broken down into a slanging match :) Anyway the discussion of transient handling by compressors really interests me as I have struggled with this issue myself. I regularly use PRO-C, DC8C, the Glue and now and again the IK 670 although I must admit I had not really got on with it very well and it is interesting to hear others dislike it on transient rich material. I also use NI Transient Shaper and and PRO-L limiter. I have a clipper but have not used it a lot yet. I am still experimenting with the order and frequency of each of these plugins and it is almost a relief to hear people say not to have too fast an attack on the compressor but instead control the transients with a limiter. Something I had been doing but felt was 'wrong'. Anyway end of ramble..
