I have an i7-3770k with a very nice air cooling heatsink on it. Currently, I'm running the processor at the default 3.5 GHz, because I've never really seen the need to overclock it until now. In Ableton Live 9, usually I'm very lag free, but once my track starts getting filled, things can start getting hectic. I'm wondering if it is worth it to do an overclock, and how large it should be. Any insight is appreciated.

Looking at how your workflow is done would be a better approach, freezing tracks and how you use FX etc.

I understand that, but sometimes I need to use the CPU intensive plugins. It's inevitable that by the closing of finishing a track it will most likely lag for me. I'd like to keep my workflow, it's pretty proper, except for using izotope sometimes on individual tracks, but alas it is useful. I'm just wondering if overclocking will make a noticeable difference.

You may get an additional 30% or so with overclocking. Allowing possibly a few more plugs. A faster CPU is a better approach.

I mean i7-3770k is pretty up there. Though, would a 6 core i7 be that much better?

I just realized that my CPU idles between 10-18 C, and only goes to 28 C on full load in Ableton. I think overclocking is definitely the best option.

I have a similar setup and have over clocked to 4.4 stable (cannot quite get to 4.5) and yes it is a big improvement, worth doing as it doesnt cost you anything and there is a wealth of advice on the internet to help. How far you can go will depend on your motherboard and of course your cooling.

Overclock it it's easy nowadays. I have an i7 920 2.3Ghz that I have had overclocked to 3.6Ghz for three years. i7 CPUs are fine upto about 85c. 115c is their limit.

Use CPU Z and CPUID to monitor core temps.

Did you try it? What happened?

Will overclocking help me out?
