Getting a Native American (?) Flute Sound

How to make that sound...

I've been trying unsuccessfully to recreate this particular flute sound from the movie The Crow which appears at 1:24. I'm not exactly sure what it is, it sounds like a flute of some kind but I can remember hearing that same exact sound in a few movies and tv shows from the 90s. Does anyone have some tips to recreating this, I'm not trying to emulate it exactly but to get something close. Thanks

Sounds like a duduk to me - a sort of Armenian cross between an oboe and a clarinet. Plenty of sampled ones available, and I'm sure people can advise on a good one. They're pretty common inclusions in collections of World or Ethnic instruments, so you might find them in a more general collection.

A piri would be a good substitute if you can't find a duduk, or even a shawm. Failing that, I reckon you could get close by layering a couple of detuned oboes with a bit of filtering.

It definitely sounds like a duduk. I was looking at some sample libraries, but now I'm thinking about just buying the instrument itself, they're not too expensive. Of course I'll have to learn how to play it somewhat, but it doesn't look too difficult and I like messing around with different instruments. Thanks for the help.

I know this sounds crazy, but if you decide to go the virtual instrument route, there was a whole "best duduk" thread a little while back, try searching the forum for it!

There's one for Sampletank in IK/eSoundz' World Instruments collection. It's around $40us for the whole lib, and you can get Sampletank Free from IK's site to run it in. There's a LOT of other good stuff in it beyond the duduk, if you're doing more ethnic, soundtrack type stuff.
