From their website:

"PSP 2Meters bundle consists two audio level measurement plug-ins: PSP VU2 and PSP PPM2. PSP VU2 offers professional VU metering with accurate overload indicators. PSP PPM2 provides professional European and BBC PPM metering with accurate overload indicators. All of their parameters, such as integration times and reference levels, are widely adjustable to ensure that these plug-ins are suitable for any application in which accurate metering is necessary."

Interesting. My first thinking is to compare with the Klanghelm VUMT, because there is something missing in this plugin (I've reported it): a hold control for the max VU values.

- Klanghelm VUMT has a volume button, PSP VU/PPM no.
- Klanghelm VUMT has figures (VU/peaks) provided in bottom right and left (not only needles). PSP VU/PPM no.
- PSP VU/PPM has a hold control indicator, means that you can know the max value VU and peaks. Klanghelm no
- PSP VU/PPM has 2 different plugin for VU and PPM. Klanghelm can switch in the same plugin. More or less that's the same or it doesn't really matter (for me)

Other things I have seen are details and quite equivalent....

Then it seems to me that Klanghelm VUMT will be better at the beginning of a channel (volume ...), PSP VU/PPM at the end or in the master (hold control indicator).

Dont hesitate to correct/update me as I've just spent 5mn to test the PSP VU/PPM, and I just bought the klanghelm this week (not the time yet to use it). I will retry tomorrow.

For me, I'm going to stick with VUMT. Unless PSP add: volume, phase flip, and figures. I use VUMT in place of a Trim plug-in in Pro Tools, and the only thing missing is a phase flip.

First thing i did was test it with Klanghelm. May still pick up the PSP just for the hold indicator.

Dont fully understand how/when to use the PSP PPM2. Is this much the same as Sonalksis FreeG?

Well, the price isn't bad :hihi:

VU meters are not high on my priority list but will check out later.

At this price, you could keep them up on screen just to impress clients.

If they look at the nice PSP meters, they won't notice how bad the music actually is...

Wait a sec... Didn't PSP have "A free professional VU and PPM metering plug-in" called "PSP VintageMeter"? Did they just rename it and now charge for it?

Post

Yep, I thought the same.

Seems no more available on their site, I wonder why. :hihi:

The thing is (and I only looked at the GUI), the PSP 2Meter offers an adjusted GUI for the European and BBC PPM meter. VUMT doesn't, it stays like a normal VU.

Furthermore, the British (BBC) and European (EBU) meter uses 10ms rise and 300ms fall (24 dB in 2.8±0.3 s to be precise) times. VUMT can be set to that manually, but the GUI stays the same.

I think PSP is doing this to stay competitive. Then again, 15USD is a bit steep considering that we have VUMT for 8EUR (about 10USD) and the free SleepyTimeRecords VU (StereoChannel), which does come with a phase switch btw (Win-only however). A GUI change to look more like VU-rized vertical bargraphs is just not doing it for me - sorry.

Neither did it in zplane's PPMulator, but hey, we can switch to "bargraph" mode here. And for the price, we get a tad more features as well.

YMMV.

Check Compyfox links right above your post for context on when/why/how.

In a nutshell:

Digital meters show the actual "peak" of a signal, not the average signal strength.

Bass intensive material can have a higher signal strength than a snare drum transient. So a combination of both (Digital Meter / RMS or VU meter, both with suitable reference levels) can help you get your signal to the right spot from the start.

This is called leveling and gain staging. Something that's still highly underrated in the digital realm, especially if you incorporate outboard hardware into your system.

As @l3x!5 already said, my KVRmarks show tons of posts of when/why/how.
