Hmmm... I've got to check that out? I could swear there was only one clip there... I'll give that a try! Pretty cool being able to record Reason input though. I havent even tried recording a real loop of material, that was already programmed into Reason, with changes in FX from Live... That would be very cool! Changing the FX in Live in real time while the Reason clip plays, and is recorded... Who Hoo!

What stale bread is talking about works when you cycle record in Arrange view, not in the Session view - just to make that clear. However, the only difference would be that you'd have to set a X bars loop in Session view manually after recording a long clip. In Arrange view it will be set automatically, ready to be moved inside the recording.

yeah sorry if i wasnt'clear enough, and what you're going to do after you're finished looprecording in the arranger view is grab the end of the audio file and drag it out till it's fully exstended to see all of the audio that you've recorded during the looprecord session.

So how does the MIDI side work..? All I could find on their website was....

QUOTE
"Yes, MIDI can be fun and easy. Drop a software instrument in a track and play. Drag and drop MIDI and audio effects, layer synths, and record MIDI as audio.

Instruments and effects are a matter of drag and drop in Live. Just drop a software instrument into a track, and you are ready to play. Add MIDI effects, such as Scale, which forces all notes into a desired key, or audio effects like Chorus, Auto Filter or any of Live's other creative plug-ins. Live's Track View shows how the signal flows, with meters between the devices, and provides you with direct access to all device controls."
END QUOTE

That doesn't say much to me. Can I record MIDI and edit it..? If so, how? Is there a piano roll or event list..? What about quantize and groove quantize..? The quote from their website implies that I have to import MIDI files into Live - bummer.

I don't want to use Live "live", just in the studio. But if I can't record and edit MIDI, then I can't see it replacing Logic.

I'd like to find out for myself but the only available Live demo is version 3. Does anyone here have the answer to these MIDI questions.

You can import MIDI files. You can record MIDI. The MIDI editor is piano roll based. You have quantisation for editing and for recording. You can select the groove type as an attribute for a clip. It is non destructive. The groove amount can be applied globally in realtime for audio and midi clips.

Live 4 can record and edit MIDI. Even now many people use Live 3 in studios.

thats right and it says this much on the ableton website my friend, you might want to go over it again
this is why everyone is so excited about it. it's not
here yet, so who knows, abletons never lied to us before and if they remain honest they promise to do for midi what they've done for audio and a little more. hence the excitement.

I'm still trying to figure out how to record an existing track, to another... Which I though you could do? Hmmm... maybe I didn't understand that... Wonder if you can do that with Reason running into Live?

There are several ways you can do that. It also depends on what you want to achieve. If I got you right you have to put the track you want to record to solo and record into another track with input set to Resample. Another option might be the consolidate function.

In Live 4 you can do it more easy, because you can simply route the output of one track into the input of another. This is how you can record audio clips with effects applied, VSTis, AUs, Rewire input all with or without effects, effect returns or simply your sound card input.

You can record Reason output into a Live 3 track/clip when Reason is the Rewire slave.

This could be the answer to a prayer, being a lifelong acid man, i could be jumping on the live bandwagon.
But what of the other players reason, acid, sonar, ?
Any news on their updates floating around ?

The Reason folks make it a point to remain very tight-lipped about their updates until they're released. You'll just pop onto their website one day and BAMMO, there you'll see Reason 3.0 or whatever, ready and waiting for you. hyper
