Hello friends,
My question is - can I play my guitar with distortion effect while using only Tracktion 5 software?
I do have an external audio interface and I have Tracktion 5.
I am a beginner and don't wan't to spend extra $$ buying Guitar Rig...
I don't know enough about DAW and Tracktion
Is it possible?
Thank you
Michael

You can if you use a free third party plugin. Try Voxengo Boogex, it sounds great and is free!

Thanks Dave,
Yes, I've tried the Free Guitar Rig 5 Player it but I didn't like the distortion effect.
I also struggle with Guitar Rig as it doesn't allow me to simultaneously play the guitar while listening to a backing track on YouTube (because it's totally controlling my sound card) - so I am looking for another solution.
I'll try Voxengo Boogex that gigazaga mentioned - I hope it'll work
Any other ideas (for YouTube+Guitar)?
Thanks

It may depend on what you use for your sound driver selection. While ASIO is normally faster and consistent, you may find you have to use Windows sound (DirectSound) to allow multiple sources to play simultaneously (like Youtube).
Depending on your sound card and processor, tho, you may introduce some unwanted latency...
You could also RECORD the audio off the specific youtube pieces and insert that as a track in Tracktion, if you are learning a piece, as long as you don't need the video.

OK, so can I use one input as ASIO for my guitar and another (Direct?) for YouTube?
I don't care about latency for YouTube (since I'll use it for backing track)
If this is possible - how do I do it?
Thank you very much!
Michael

afaik you can't use different drivermodels at the same time.
if your asio driver is "multi client", which means you can assign different channels of the driver to different applications, you can use that and assign for example asio 1/2 to tracktion and asio 3/4 to the system audio. in tracktions settings dialog for audio you can enable and disable driverchannels.
if that is not the case, you have to use the wdm (windows) driver. it is "multiclient" by default, so you can assign channels 1/2 to tracktion and channels 3/4 to the windows system-playback for your browser and youtube.
