I would welcome any opinions on the track below. It's my first piece using Reason (I'm normally a flooper.)
The track uses Reason's in-built Orkestra Refill. Some who have listened to it have said that the samples sound a bit crappy. Also the piece might be a little robotic and in need of some velocity changes to make it sound a little more human.

i'm sorry i have to say your track sounds "not so good"
and not only because of the bad samples - there are no
harmonics in the strings and the "timpani" dosen't fit
in time (the sound is very bad - find better ones @ www.hammersound.net )
i think u have to learn a lot about arrangement and melodies
but don't give up!

verstaerker - thanks for taking the time to listen to my tune. I agree that the I need to learn a lot more about arrangements which I guess is one reason why I started to write this type of track and why I sent this post to KvR in the first place to try and gauge my lack of ability. The track does have a lot of room for improvement. Hopefuly I'll be able to post the tune back up in on KvR in a few months time with a few improvments! You don't know of any cheap string samples/refills do you!?

I don't think the string samples in particular are awful. Maybe I'm just easily pleased. Sometimes they weren't used that well. I think you massacred one of the string patches there. I thought I could hear massive stacked chords going on in the upper registers which probably isn't going to make any string sample sound good.
The piece itself didn't grab me at all - but I've heard rambling dischordant pieces being used for modern/interpretive dance and I haven't particularly liked it there either.
But good on you for breaking out of your own mould a bit. It's fun trying something new isn't it?
I think if you want to work with orchestral music as a learning experience I would also learn a bit more music theory. I read in one of your comments on SectionZ that alot of the dischords were more you not understanding which notes go with which. In orchestral music it's actually quite important to know that at least at some level. Are you wanting to explore this area further or was this a once-off for you?
[edit]also this style doesn't come across to me as chamber music. This is more like an attempt at full-on orchestral. Someone up on their classical genres could probably put that a bit better and more accurately

caleb - thanks to you as well for listening to the track. one of the samples is used quite heavily and i did stack a whole load of chords onto that one.
I am glad that I started the track especially as it's a break from the norm for me. I'm starting to learn the basics of music theory but as verstaerker said I need to perhaps start downloading some classical style midi files to see how the pros do it.
I labelled the as being chamber music as someone on another forum said it wasn't truly fully orchestral, personal choice I suppose!

Yeah it was okay... There's some good ideas in there...
I think you need to give your strings more body, your using a very slow pizz cello/c bass over most the piece. I would bring some slow cello and C Bass into the piece, to thicken the string sound. I like the way you reflect the tune with different instruments. Though I did find the piece slightly random in structure... But this could be more of a taste thing... I would also like to hear more dynamics in the piece. The piece starts and stays at the same level throughout... by intoducing quieter sections and building to crescendos you will create more drama and tension within the piece. But again this could be a taste thing.
I don't think the instruments sound too bad to be honest.. and I don't think your going to find any better ones on Hammersound. The best free orchestral soundfont is the SJ orchestra, which I believe Dave Spiers have made available somewhere... (do a search in the Instrument forum!)...
