Hardware synth.

VA, FM, PM, PD, single note samples, whatever sounds good. No bass at all sometimes (<i>really</i> making way for the kick drum).

For squelchy, analogue bass I always turn to WaspXT. For a more digital/FM kind of bass I use LOVEkILLER [phase distortion] or kARMAkILLER. I even use polyIblit on one track.
NOVAkILL : Legion GO, AMD Z1x, 16GB RAM, Win11 | Audient EVO 8 | Lumi Keys | Studio Pro 8
Korg Odyssey, bx-oberhausen, Proxima, PolyMax, GR8, JP6K, Union, Atomika,
Invader 2, Flow Motion, Olga, TRK 01, Thorn, Spire, VG Iron

Virtual or Real Analog Synths, nothing else for me as far as Basses go.

I use both sample players (ie, Kompakt) and FM synths (ie Sytrus)...Guess most use more than ove source. Oh, and I play guitar so I sometimes record the bass part from the guitar and pitch it down.

MM has really cool bass sounds (and the variety :-o ).

I usually record bass with MM (both midi and audio), and later record a friend playing either jazz bass or G&L 5-string.

Vote for VA / FM synth plugins if the hardware synth is VA / analog / FM
Vote for Physical Modelling if you're using a hardware PM synth

I use /have used every method listed. It depends on the kind of track and what i have available.

If i want a bass guitar sound and there is one available,i,ll play it on a real guitar ,if not i,ll use Trilogy.

Sometimes the bass could simply be a sine wave or similar layered under a sample or a tuned synthesized drum from Attack or Rm4.

Or it could be a patch from a Reaktor ensemble or even a good old fashioned fm patch from a tx81z or.........

to get my bass i use:

- a bass guitar that i play (freted, fretless, and 8 string)
- VA
- FM
- physical modeling
- wavetable
- additive

it just depends on the track and is inspiring me at the time.

jeeee, do you need some kind of a permit to use an 8-string?

that's gotta be one monster (sorry, tm, c) of a bass guitar.

I mostly use Quantum 64 for sine wave basses.

I then run them through Kjaerhus Master Limiter and set Treshold knob to 0% (-20db).

I then filter the overtones out using a filter.

If someone could tell me if the result is a simple sinewave or something better, it'd be well appreciated! :)

5-string American Standard Jazz by Fender over here. It's actually my dad's, but he rarely plays it these days so I can borrow it whenever. I think he's just happy that I'm making music. ;)

I know this is narrow-minded, but when I hear "bass" patches on a synth, I never think of them as bass. I just think of them as... synth patches. It's not that I'm against synths (love'em!) just that the kinds of patches I'm thinking of usually sound better to me as leads than for true basslines.

Disclaimer: I already know I'm an ignorant f*** when it comes to electronica. I've tried, but in a lot of ways I still don't "get" it. :D
