Hi all,

Hopefully this is not too dumb a question, but how do you do 'shuffle' on Cubase SX2? For example if I'm wanting to get that housey sort of groove/shuffle, I can hear it in released music, but am curious how to do this. Is it a midi quantize setting? and if so is it over all midi sequencing? just drums? or otherwise? Or is it a setting over the entire cubase sequencing, rather than specific midi quantizing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers,
EoN

On a drum pattern, it’s usually the hat, ride or shaker that gives you the swing feel. So the bass drum of a ‘4-to the floor’ is pretty much the same as a regular House beat.
Try sticking 8 (quavers) cls-hat beats across 1 bar. Quantize using 1/8 Note T. You should hear a swing feel to the hats. You can adjust the swing feel by going to quantize setup, switching from triplet to straight and pushing the swing slider to 100%.
The quantize setting depends entirely on the complexity of the rhythms you create.

i would usually use 1/8 (not triplet)

and then in quantize setup, altering the shuffle amount to approx 60 or 70%

Thanks guys, will give it a shot. So it only needs to go on hi hats? no other percussion?

hey mate, i work alot with shuffle grooves.
its kinda good to set the shuffle to around 50% over the whole midi drum track if the hats are doing it but not the kick it creates a off center groove... feels disjointed... cubase is pretty good at doing it... ableton live is made for it... best of luck

i put it on ALL percussion! and even synths

although i find applying a 'random position' value to some tracks gives it more of a loose/humanized groove
